The Landmark: Tiffany & Co.’s New Main Attraction https://sharpmagazine.com/2023/06/09/the-landmark-tiffany-co-flagship/ Fri, 09 Jun 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://sharpmagazine.com/?p=138128 A look inside Tiffany & Co.’s redesigned Fifth Avenue flagship, The Landmark.

After three years of meticulous planning, the newly named Tiffany & Co. Fifth Avenue store The Landmark has officially opened its doors. With esteemed artworks, the Blue Box Café, a never-before-seen collection of jewellery, and an assortment of coveted homewares, timepieces, and leather accessories, the options throughout the ten-floor masterpiece appear endless.

Luxury items aside, the inner workings of the store speak for themselves. Famed architect Peter Marino was tasked with maintaining historical parts of the original structure, as acquired by Tiffany in 1940, while mixing in modern renovations throughout the 100,000 square foot building, making it one of the largest stores in Manhattan. The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA New York) designed the three-store glass addition, expanding the space to ten storeys.

Each floor focuses on different sections of Tiffany & Co.’s offerings, including High Jewellery masterpieces, Love & Engagement, silver designs, and home décor. Integrated amongst the shoppable items are nearly 40 outstanding works of art from artists such as Damien Hirst, Julian Schnabel, and Anna Weyant, as well as rotating museum and gallery space on floors eight and nine. A grand mirrored staircase is at the heart of the store, spiralling from floors three to eight with a large custom statue by Daniel Arsham at the base on the Love & Engagement third floor.

Donned in head-to-toe custom Givenchy uniforms, the store staff are masters in the history and details of the location, offering an upclose look at the design process behind High Jewellery pieces on the seventh floor, to the history and meaning behind each piece of artwork featured in, or commissioned for, the store. On the sixth floor you can have breakfast at Tiffany’s, as Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud has curated a unique daytime dining experience complete with breakfast and tea offerings from the seasonally inspired menu.

In honour of the reopening, Tiffany & Co. displayed the iconic Tiffany Diamond, a heritage piece with 128.54 carats that has been reset for the first time in ten years. To keep the celebration going, Tiffany held an exclusive opening party complete with a star-studded roster of guests including Michael B. Jordan, Jimin of BTS, Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, and a musical performance by Katy Perry, before Mark Ronson DJed into the end of the night. As one of the largest stores in Manhattan, it’s no surprise that The Landmark houses an overwhelming amount of beauty to be seen.

Dive Into Summer With GUESS UOMO ACQUA https://sharpmagazine.com/2023/05/31/guess-uomo-acqua-new-cologne/ Wed, 31 May 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://sharpmagazine.com/?p=137310 Meet GUESS Uomo Acqua, a new cologne inspired by the Mediterranean Sea.

SHARP & GUESS

Scent is the most powerful of the senses, able to surface long-forgotten memories and evoke far-off places. That’s part of what makes a signature scent so appealing, for both the man who wears it and those who are close to him. It’s a way of subtly defining yourself in the world, an essential piece of your wardrobe alongside your most beloved suits, button-downs, and loafers. The new GUESS Uomo Acqua fragrance combines diverse elements to create an expression of masculinity that’s as complex as it is evocative, tailor-made to become your signature scent for the summer.

GUESS Uomo Acqua model standing on sandy beach

Following the success of GUESS Uomo — a deep and timeless fragrance inspired by men who live life with passion and individuality — GUESS Uomo Acqua is the second fragrance to join the eponymous collection. Where GUESS Uomo is warm and intense, GUESS Uomo Acqua is soft and serene; base notes of sandalwood and salted seamoss anchor a reviving blend of aromatics like lemon and juniper.

“I knew this fragrance had to have the ability to be both calm and wild in spirit,” said Perfumer Clement Gavarry, who drew on the concept of duality and the changing moods of the ocean to create the scent. Using cardamom and palo santo smoke to symbolize the roughness and strength of the sea, he balanced these moody elements with fresh and vibrant notes of sage and cucumber to create a fragrance that’s ideal for the warmer months. “Together [these elements] create the perfect harmony that encompasses the diversity of the sea and the Uomo man,” Gavarry said.

GUESS Uomo Acqua bottle in clear water

Following the design of GUESS Uomo, GUESS Uomo Acqua is presented in a bottle inspired by Italian architecture. The new summer scent, however, is distinguished by a turquoise-coloured glass bottle, with luxurious gold accents reminiscent of the Mediterranean’s azure waters.

With its brightness and vibrance, GUESS Uomo Acqua is designed to reflect the boldness, complexity, and confidence of a certain kind of man. As a counterpoint to GUESS Uomo, which is ideal for the cooler months, GUESS Uomo Acqua is the perfect signature scent for the summer, whether you’re sunning yourself on the beach in Sardinia or making waves closer to home.

A SHARP Guide For Fathers, By Fathers https://sharpmagazine.com/2023/05/29/fathers-day-gift-guide/ Mon, 29 May 2023 08:41:50 +0000 https://sharpmagazine.com/?p=124824 We interview some of our favourite dads to craft this year's Father's Day gift guide.

The post A SHARP Guide For Fathers, By Fathers appeared first on Sharp Magazine.

]]>
To be a dad is to be a caregiver, a teacher, a role model, a short-order cook, a counsellor, a comedian, a coach, and a financial advisor, among many other responsibilities. Within this, however, is infinite variation: no two dads are alike, and every dad brings his own experience, wisdom, and flaws to the job.

Father’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the dads we know and all they’ve done for us over the years, but also to take stock of the ever-evolving concept of fatherhood itself, and the myriad ways in which dads of all kinds make the world a better place. In honour of this occasion, SHARP’s Father’s Day guide is packed with everything you need to toast the dads in your life, plus essential wisdom from some of the coolest dads we know.

Cory Vitiello, Chef

Cory Vitiello

A star of the Canadian culinary scene for more than 15 years, Vitiello splits his time between developing restaurant concepts for LFG Growth Partners and running Flock, his growing chain of rotisserie restaurants. Vitiello’s latest project, however, is closer to his heart: a book about cooking with his son. In his new book, Dad in the Kitchen (Penguin Random House, $37.50), Vitiello shares his favourite dishes to make for (and with) kids.

What’s the best advice you’ve received about fatherhood?

The best advice that I had came from Martina, my partner, who from day one encouraged me to be a part of bedtimes, feeding times, and nap times. I didn’t have a lot of friends who had similar experiences, but if she hadn’t insisted that I share those responsibilities, I would have missed an opportunity to create a real emotional connection and bond with Barlow from day one.

How are you a different parent than your dad was?

He’s much more outdoorsy than me, and I remember from an early age learning how to canoe and fish and all of these kinds of quintessential father-child moments. My version of that is inside the kitchen. We cook together, we talk together, and that’s our bonding. It’s not going out into nature and pitching a tent, it’s going to the grocery store or the market and picking our dinner tonight.

Dad In The Kitchen Book Cover

What’s your go-to recipe to make with your son?

If it’s been a challenging day and we need something quick on the table I like to make a kind of carbonara with broccoli and this creamy cheese-egg sauce. Barlow pulls up his little stool and sometimes he helps me grate the cheese and mix the eggs, or he’ll just draw or mould play dough beside me while I’m cooking.

Bombay Sapphire

Bombay Sapphire Gin With Glass
Learn More

The only thing better than a perfectly mixed gin martini is a perfectly mixed gin martini that makes the planet a little better. That’s why Bombay Sapphire has been working to become the world’s most sustainable global gin, from the recycled bricks and roof tiles at its award-winning distillery to the 100 per cent sustainably sourced botanicals certified by ECOCERT in every drop. With its signature fresh and vibrant taste based on the original 1761 recipe and its iconic blue bottle (made from one-third recycled glass, naturally), this premium gin is ready to take Dad’s summer cocktails to the next level. ($31)

Glenmorangie Original 10-Year-Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Glenmorangie Bottle Single Malt
Learn More

There are a lot of nice highland single-malts out there, but few of them can be considered true classics of the genre. Glenmorangie’s signature whisky, however, has been in production for over 175 years and has been a constant presence in the world’s most discerning bars for almost as long. Matured for a decade in first- and second-fill American ex-bourbon casks, its unique peach-and-vanilla character makes it a quintessential sipping whisky, whether neat with a few drops of water or on the rocks. ($77)

Angel’s Envy Bourbon

Angel's Envy Bottle
Learn More

Founded in 2010 and based in the heart of Louisville, this relatively recent addition to the bourbon scene is aged for four to six years in new, charred white oak barrels before being blended to achieve its signature flavour profile. Crucially, during the final stages of production, Angel’s Envy is one of the few bourbons to be finished for up to six additional months in Portuguese port barrels before being blended again. The result, with notes of maple syrup and chocolate, is sure to earn a place on any bourbon fan’s top shelf. ($80)

Ian Rosen, President and COO

Ian Rosen Portrait

As the third generation of his family to lead Canadian menswear retailer Harry Rosen, Ian Rosen has a unique perspective on the importance of strong relationships between fathers and sons. Menswear may be in his blood, but as a father to three young daughters, he’s enjoying becoming as skilled at braiding hair as he is at selling suits and ties.

What’s the biggest challenge of being a dad for you?

Being able to balance what’s going on professionally with being the dad that I want to be at home. I learned that lesson from my father and grandfather who travelled a lot and had very busy professional lives. It’s very challenging, but it’s really important for me.

What’s been the most rewarding thing for you so far?

My oldest daughter is getting super into music so I’m trying to get her hooked on bands that I like. She recently got to know a few Beatles songs and we made some headway with Yellow Submarine. I’m just fascinated that there are these things that they don’t know about yet and I get the opportunity to introduce them to. It’s really cool.

How are you a different parent than your dad was?

We’re in the same profession and business never stops, and even more so in today’s world where we have e-commerce running 24/7 365. There’s always an excuse to turn back to business so having the discipline not to do that is probably the most important trait that I was taught as a kid. But my dad also had three boys and I have three girls, so it’s definitely different… I can do a very good French braid.

Hermès H Embroidered Buttoned Polo Shirt

Hermès shirt
Learn More

Every dad has two kinds of shirts in his wardrobe — the ones he wears when he needs to look his best, and the ones he really loves. This low-key polo from the legendary French Maison is that rarest of rare things: a shirt that’s as comfortable as it is stylish. Made in Italy from preternaturally soft pre-washed cotton, this versatile top is ready to add a colourful punch to his workday wardrobe and a suave complement to his off-duty looks. If only finding the perfect pair of pants was this easy. ($760)

Fendi Antique Small Nappa Leather Tote

Fendi Small Grey Antique Nappa Leather Bag on white background Father's Day

This bag – slate grey, straight from the runway – has made a seamless transition into the menswear collection at Prada. Fashionable as it is, the bag doesn’t sacrifice function – its sheer durability is enough to impress the most practically minded fathers. Antique leather material provides a sturdy build, fit to carry essentials like laptops and books in style. ($3,950)

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller

Rolex Sky-Dweller
Learn More

It doesn’t get as much hype as some of the other members of the Rolex family, but from its Oystersteel and white gold case to its mint green dial to its Jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel, the 2023 Sky-Dweller is every bit as entitled to a place on the most discerning of wrists. In addition to its attention-grabbing looks, the Sky-Dweller is fitted with one of Rolex’s most complicated movements including an annual calendar and second time zone, making it a useful tool for frequent flyers. ($18,700)

Bulgari Aluminum Capri Solotiempo

Bulvgari watch
Learn More

For dads who are partial to unbuttoned shirts, deep tans, and spending as much time in the sun as possible, this limited-edition Bulgari captures the romance of the Mediterranean with a gradient dial the colour of Capri’s clear blue water. Its 40mm case is made from aluminum, with a DLC-coated titanium case back, a rubber bezel, and 100m of water resistance, so he won’t have to take it off to have a dip in the Blue Grotto, or wherever his summer vacation takes him. ($4,320)

Fendi Peekaboo ISeeU XCross Bag

FENDI Peekaboo ISeeU XCrosson white background mens luxury bag
Learn More

It’s a problem nearly as old as fatherhood itself: a dad must carry many things, and he must have something in which to contain them all. Different dads have different answers to this age-old question, from messenger bags to backpacks to canvas totes, but none of these has quite the same level of fashionable street cred as the Fendi Peekaboo IseeU XCross. This Italian-made carry-all, an evolution of one of the most coveted designs in their women’s line, has recently migrated to the menswear collection, bringing with it a whole new way for fashion-forward dads to tote their stuff in style. ($4,500)

Tudor Black Bay 41

Tudor Black Bay
Learn More

As anyone who collects watches will tell you, the correct number of pieces is exactly one more than you currently have. Tudor’s new Black Bay 41, however, makes a strong argument for a one-watch collection. A classic tool watch, the Black Bay’s understated combination of a 41 mm steel case and bracelet will look good with everything from a suit to swim trunks, and its new in-house automatic movement is rated for exceptional accuracy. Whether he owns a single watch or a dozen of them, there’s a good chance Dad is going wear this one more than any other. ($4,880)

Dior Men Baseball Cap

Dior Ballcap
Learn More

If Dad is a fan of Succession, he may be familiar with the phenomenon of the status cap and its ability to impart the air of formidable power and discerning taste on anyone who wears it. If not, this blacked-out baseball hat, crafted in Italy from high-quality cotton canvas, will be a perfect introduction. Billion-dollar stock portfolio and private jet not included. ($800)

Nazem Kadri, Athlete

Nazem playing hockey

After a decade playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kadri secured his place in history by helping the Colorado Avalanche take home the Stanley Cup in 2022, with seven playoff goals and eight assists to his credit. Recently signed to a seven-year, $49-million contract with the Calgary Flames, Kadri is proud to be an executive board member of the Hockey Diversity Alliance and one of the most successful Muslim hockey players of all time.

What surprised you the most about becoming a dad?

How fulfilling it is to come home to my little girl.

What’s the best advice you’ve received about fatherhood?

Enjoy the early years.

What’s the most challenging thing about fatherhood for you?

Having patience every day.

What’s your favourite way to bond with your daughter?

Watching her play sports and playing them with her.

What’s your favourite “dad hack”?

I just try to make her as busy as possible during the day, and that always makes bedtimes easier.

How are you a different parent than your own dad?

I’m very hands-on, and I enjoy spending quality time with my daughter, just like my dad used to do with me. I would say I’m a more patient man than my father was, which has been key in raising her.

As a dad who travels for work, how do you try to show up for your kids, even if you’re not home?

Travelling is hard, but my daughter and I FaceTime every day. I’m always checking in to see how her day is going.

What surprised you the most about becoming a dad?

There’s a feeling of… not quite immortality, but maybe a lessening of my own self-importance.

What’s the best advice you’ve received about fatherhood?

“Who you are matters more than what you do.”

What’s your favourite “dad hack”?

Keep all the Lego pieces on a blanket. Then scoop up the entire blanket and put it in the bin.

Have you ever felt constrained by stereotypes about how a dad should or shouldn’t be?

These days it feels like we’re past most dad expectations or judgments. For me it’s just a game of time and of savouring. If life expectancy now is 10 decades — knock on wood — there’s only one decade with little kids. So it’s doing all the things that feel implausible but which you’ll never regret. In general, it’s aiming for less programming and more time together.

What’s the best way to think about parenthood and happiness?

Nothing matters more to long-term happiness than the strength of your relationship with friends and family. Nothing. Not health, not income, not nationality — nothing. So every father-son hooky day or after-dinner dance party or long chat in the car is ultimately a strengthening of the relationship — and of future happiness.

Dior Beachwear Capsule: Sustainability in Style https://sharpmagazine.com/2023/05/23/dior-parley-beachwear-capsule-sustainability/ Tue, 23 May 2023 23:45:09 +0000 https://sharpmagazine.com/?p=137260 High fashion meets cutting-edge science in Dior's Beachwear Capsule.

The post Dior Beachwear Capsule: Sustainability in Style appeared first on Sharp Magazine.

]]>
For children and adults alike, summer beach days are ripe for daydreams. Stories of long-lost treasures and alluring saltwater pearls share a sentiment: the ocean is home to adventure. Dior Beachwear Capsule embodies this playful sense of possibility with crisp looks born from sea-saving materials.

A mutual interest in “material revolution” towards sustainable fashion spurred Dior’s second collaboration with Parley for the Oceans, a non-profit dedicated to marine protection. The result? An innovative celebration of oceanic beauty, with Dior’s artisans spinning upcycled marine debris and fishing gear into trademark high-quality fabrics like seersucker and silk knit.

The project flowed naturally from the fashion house – in the brand’s early days, Christian Dior took inspiration from the rolling waves of his birthplace in Granville, France. Current artistic designer Kim Jones clearly shares his predecessor’s passion: the endeavour proudly sources 96% of its fabrics from recycled material.

The designs flaunt their heritage with a Neptunian flair. Cameos of grey and navy contrast playful shades of lemon-yellow and coral. Meanwhile, nautical motifs permeate the collection’s footwear: exterior cuts resemble beach-foam bubbles, while laces have the wiry, taut feel of a fishing line.

Dior beach capsule close up, blue and white outfits

These fresh designs are the fruit of a joint research project between Parsley and Dior, started back in 2019. With Dior’s fashion prowess and Parsley’s environmental acumen, the two created new yarns and fabrics from Parley Ocean Plastic®. The materials are constructed out of debris recovered from remote coastlines – including those of Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the Dominican Republic – before their metamorphosis into menswear.

The process of turning rubbish into couture is emblematic of both parties’ bold attitude towards climate change. Cyrill Gutsch, founder and CEO of Parley for the Oceans, said himself: “We need transformational change in every sector of society,” characterizing the collaboration as “a call for the fashion industry to revolutionize its production methods.”

Gutsch keeps his word – the collection makes significant material impact. Dior’s Beachwear Capsule supports the new “Parley X10” program, which mandates that “ten times the equivalent of each product’s carbon and plastic footprint will be intercepted from nature, the development of new materials that can replace plastic long-term is funded, and the use of new, virgin plastic is avoided.”

On the aesthetic side, the Beachwear Capsule continues to be a trailblazer. Jones’ work pushes the fashion boundaries as he makes bold statements of contrast, blurring the lines between functional fashion and haute couture. The collection reimagines utilitarian staples like fishing hats and running shoes with flamboyant colours and bold silhouettes. Dior’s take on modern menswear is as refreshing as a mid-July swim: rejuvenating, relaxing, and invigorating all at once.

Followers of fashion know that menswear is best understood through its subtleties. Classic staples are defined by nuances: quality tailoring, artisan material, and original patterns distinguish innovative looks from the mainstream. Jones’s jackets and shorts lend themselves to avant-garde imagery; icy blues glimmer against deep indigo backgrounds, bringing to mind moonlight over calm waters.

While Jones is first and foremost a designer, his curatorial skills are impressive in their own right. His resume is dotted with successful partnerships ranging from fellow fashion brands like Nike to an unlikely link up with Technogym. A predecessor of the Beachwear Capsule might be Spring 2023’s California Couture, a collaboration with American designer Eli Russell Linnetz (ERL) that featured cannage patterns and recycled ocean polyester. The Beachwear Capsule fine tunes these techniques as it delves further into sustainable fashion, cutting playful silhouettes with effortless elegance.

Highlights of the collection include the Mini Gallop Sling Bag, a compact interpretation of Saddle codes that features an adjustable nylon strap and CD aluminum buckle. Fashioned from grey gained calfskin, the versatile bag is a refined addition to seaside adventures. On the apparel side, the Cannage Knit Sleeveless T-Shirt stands out as a contemporary casual look to match with swim trunks or pants from the season. Whichever item hangs in your closet, it’s sure to make sustainability synonymous with style.

Winning Mindset: Meet NBA Star and Invictus Ambassador Jalen Green https://sharpmagazine.com/2023/05/16/jalen-green-interview-invictus/ Tue, 16 May 2023 13:23:30 +0000 https://sharpmagazine.com/?p=136210 The young Rockets shooting guard opens up about future ambitions.

The post Winning Mindset: Meet NBA Star and Invictus Ambassador Jalen Green appeared first on Sharp Magazine.

]]>
Jalen Green has a lot to prove. The upstart shooting guard from suburban California was the second overall pick in the first round of the 2021 round, plucked straight out of high school and landing right behind hotshot Pistons point guard Cade Cunningham and ahead of future Rookie of the Year Scottie Barnes. His impact on his new team has been immediate, but the Houston Rockets have continued to struggle around him, so far failing to capitalize on his more than 22 points and nearly 4 rebounds per game to wind up with the NBA’s league-worst record this season, racking up a mere 22 wins. There’s no doubt that Green is a future All Star already playing some truly magnificent basketball — and all that at the age of 21. But right now, all eyes are on the big man to help his team earn some W’s.

The good news is, he’s ready for it — more than ready. To hear Green tell it, he’s hungry to get out there on the floor and prove that he’s capable of doing even more for the ailing Rockets franchise, maybe even bringing them back to the hallowed state of their championship glory days of the mid-1990s. While Green himself making the All Star team sooner or later feels inevitable, actually propelling the team he’s on to a winning record (let alone a chip) is going to be an uphill challenge. It’s going to take every last ounce of a winning mindset that Green’s spent years diligently cultivating.

Green spoke to SHARP about his winning mindset, his ambitions to become an NBA champion, and his successful partnership with Invictus Victory and Paco Rabanne.

What does victory feel like to you?

Victory to me is working towards a goal and achieving it. That’s always a win in my eyes, especially if you work for something and it comes to fruition.

What was your experience like being at such an early stage of the G League Ignite? How did the experience differ from your expectations?

The G league was a pivotal stage for me. I moved out and was on my own at 18 playing to play professional basketball. During that time, I grew up very fast the experience overall helped me mature and improve my game the court. Being around vets and other pros showed me what it’s like to live and work like a pro and I am forever appreciative of the experience.

What are your personal hopes for All Star and All NBA selections going forward? Are those expectations you have for yourself now that you are no longer a rookie?

The goal is to make the all-star team and get my team to the playoffs. My initial years have been filled with a ton of self-growth but I want to start winning more games. It would be amazing to be an All-Star, that’s definitely a goal but, getting to the playoffs is on my list as well.

jalen green invictus interview

Have you always been into cologne/fragrance or is this something new that you’ve started exploring more recently?

Since a kid I’ve always liked fragrances. It’s a necessity when I step out. You feel good when you smell good, and I feel refreshed and clean when I have a cologne on.

What is it about Invictus Victory that resonates for you? Is it more about the aromas themselves, or the energy and feel of the brand/its branding/etc?

What resonates with me about Invictus Victory is definitely the energy and feel of the brand. The boldness and confidence that the brand exudes really speaks to me as an athlete. The packaging and overall aesthetic aligns with my personal style. Of course, the colognes themselves are important as well, as I want to smell good on and off the court, but it’s the overall vibe of the brand that really draws me in.

How did your relationship with Invictus Victory and Paco Rabanne get started?

My relationship with Invictus and Paco Rabanne began when I received a partnership offer to be a part of their campaign. The international campaign was shot in Spain, and it was an experience I will never forget. The Paco Rabanne team have been great to work with. They’ve treated me like family from the beginning and welcomed me and my team during my trip to Spain a few summers ago.

Timothée Chalamet: Bleu de Chanel’s New Ambassador https://sharpmagazine.com/2023/05/15/timothee-chalamet-bleu-de-chanel-ambassador/ Mon, 15 May 2023 15:56:55 +0000 https://sharpmagazine.com/?p=136836 The 27-year-old actor teams up with the French house in latest fragrance campaign.

The post Timothée Chalamet: Bleu de Chanel’s New Ambassador appeared first on Sharp Magazine.

]]>
Timothée Chalamet is one of those rare names that doesn’t need an introduction — his star became a supernova in record time, with roles in Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird, and Dune (among others) showcasing both excellence and versatility. With a pop culture relevance reminiscent of 90s boyband-mania and the celebrity mystique of old Hollywood stars, Chalamet makes a fitting ambassador for the latest formula of Chanel’s timeless scent, Bleu de Chanel

Per the brand itself, Bleu de Chanel is a cologne for “a man who does not limit himself to the ordinary boundaries life sets and looks beyond what is visible.” This type of person, they say, is captured by Chalamet’s “visionary and edgy spirit.”

Timothée Chalamet for Chanel

The contents of the bottle, of course, live up to their lofty reputation. A spritz on the wrist smells like an early spring walk through the woods: base notes of sandalwood, patchouli, and cedar anchor top accents of grapefruit and pink pepper, blended with middle notes of nutmeg, jasmine, and ginger. Subtle yet assertive, the men’s fragrance symbolizes the quiet elegance Chanel is known for.

When asked what the cologne represents, Chalamet said: “Not unlike movies and storytelling in general, the scent and the narrative behind it are open for interpretation.” The actor’s involvement, then, is especially apt – he says he’s always been drawn to literature and philosophy: “One-liners that make sense about the truth of life – that’s where it’s at. It comes down to whatever helps you make sense of the day and where you’re going.”

Chalamet continues to pad his resume in 2023 with roles including Paul in Dune: Part Two and the titular character of Willy in Wonka, both due to premiere this year. In the meantime, the 27-year-old is set to act as Bob Dylan James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, filming this summer.

Just as busy, the French fashion house has enjoyed a high-profile spring, epitomized by the Met Gala’s Lagerfeld tribute. Fittingly, the productive pairing is more than a regular endorsement – in typical Chanel fashion, the campaign is a marriage of art and luxury. The advertising campaign, shot by Mario Sorrenti, is set to drop in June 2023, followed by a film directed by Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street, The Irishman), scheduled to release this fall.

The film will be the second of Scorsese’s in Bleu de Chanel history; he directed late French actor Gabriel Ulliel (Hannabal Rising) for a fragrance promotion in 2010. Special events like these don’t just make their mark culturally – for Chalamet, a scent renders memories indelible. “For me, personally, there’s a specific intention behind fragrance. I’m not someone who wears a scent all the time. When I do, it becomes emblematic of a moment, and later there’s a nostalgia for that moment and it becomes something more meaningful.”

Bleu de Chanel bottles

The collaboration marks the first time Chalamet has served as the official ambassador to any beauty or fashion label. We’re sure, however, that the actor will join the industry with ease – as Chalamet told Chanel, “If something doesn’t evoke fear, it’s not challenging enough for you to do.”

Since at least the mid-2010s, streetwear has been guiding trends and influencing everything from how businesses run (the limited edition and collaboration-heavy drop model) to how we dress when conducting business (decidedly more casual). But that might not be the case for much longer. In the places where streetwear recently ruled — the cool cafés and wine bars, the buzziest runways, the mysterious artists’ studios — there are a growing number of tailored and tailoring-adjacent pieces. You might spot a sleek suit or a double-breasted sport coat here, or a peak lapel there, with an Oxford-cloth shirt or a silk necktie thrown in for good measure.

“The ritual of getting dressed has a renewed sense of meaning,” says Jian DeLeon, men’s fashion director at Nordstrom. “There’s fewer men wearing suits because they have to, and more wearing suits because they want to.”

“I think what it speaks to,” he continues, “is that men are wanting to dress ‘nice’ again.” For his part, Lawrence Schlossman, co-host of the podcast Throwing Fits and one of the most influential voices in the online menswear movement of the last decade, thinks it’s part and parcel of an evolving consumer base. “I think a certain consumer is ready to have his look to grow up with him,” he posits. He sees it as another stop in the natural evolution of style: “There are a bunch of different guys who’ve matured since they started caring about personal style. It’s the nature of how time works,” Schlossman says.

This new era of tailoring is far from the stuffy suiting of yore. It’s intriguing, fun, playful, and — perhaps most importantly — it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The tailoring and the way it’s worn might be less serious than before, but “it still connotes a seriousness and maturity for the person wearing it,” Schlossman says — even “among members of the creative class.”

“It’s about taking the fussiness out of it and not being afraid to inject a little bit of personality in how you wear it”

Jian DeLeon

While we think of tailoring as the wardrobe of choice for bankers, lawyers, and other supposedly serious people, the new class of tailored menswear purveyors are instead keen to lean into new aesthetics. Now, the suit can be anything from artsy and hip to Hollywood chic and glam, without jeopardizing its timeless, traditional appeal.

That offers people a new range of possibilities when opting to wear a suit. “It’s about taking the fussiness out of it and not being afraid to inject a little bit of personality in how you wear it,” DeLeon explains.

Take Drake’s, for example. The London-based brand has been championing relaxed elegance since it was founded in 1977 by Michael Drake. Today, under the creative direction of Michael Hill, Drake’s can be found on Savile Row, hallowed tailoring ground, but also on New York’s Canal Street, once infamous for the counterfeit goods sold on its sidewalks. At first glance, the juxtaposition might seem odd, but it typifies Drake’s ability to make beautiful tailoring without taking itself too seriously. Drake’s prides itself, as its official website puts it, on dressing “artists, actors, chefs, writers, photographers, and everyone in between.”

“I think our clothes strike that balance, which then hopefully appeals to a varied clientele,” Hill says about the challenge of evolving while still acknowledging the brand’s history and heritage. “Also, our clothes can, and should be, worn in numerous environments and scenarios: in an art studio, a restaurant, at the weekend, a wedding, and in the office.”

“Our clothes can, and should be, worn in numerous environments and scenarios: in an art studio, a restaurant, at the weekend, a wedding, and in the office.”

Michael Hill

A cursory glance at their Spring/Summer 2023 collection is a masterclass in balance, range, and versatility. “While we’re British,” Hill says, “we look to other countries like Italy, France, Japan, as well as the east coast of America, for inspiration.” That can be felt in the collection: suits with pleated trousers rendered in a range of fabrics, from classic checks to collegiate corduroy; sport coats and double-breasted jackets; vibrant Shetland sweaters and shirting; timeless grey wool and light blue Oxfords. Playful graphic touches are applied with refined, restrained taste, and age-old pieces — like the chore coat — are reworked in a way only Drake’s seems capable of: in hi-vis orange Casentino wool.

The more informal approach to tailoring lends it a cool, unfussy elegance that appeals to the creative class. Just how cool has Drake’s made Savile Row? For the last few years, they’ve been collaborating with one of the most hyped brands in the world, New York’s Aimé Leon Dore.

Of course, Drake’s is not alone in bringing a youthful edge to the tailoring world. Ernest W. Baker is another such brand. But before being a brand, Ernest W. Baker was an ad man in Detroit — think Mad Men, but more automobile-focused. His grandson Reid and co-designer Inês Amorim founded the brand in 2016, using Ernest as muse and his wardrobe as an inspiration, and reimagining the mid-century Americana aesthetic. While that might sound like what Thom Browne has been doing, Baker and Amorim have infused Ernest W. Baker’s tailoring with a youthful, glamorous edge that feels like it draws as much on the wardrobes of bygone Hollywood stars as Detroit ad men.

Ernest W. Baker’s current Spring/Summer 2023 collection offers a snapshot of the brand’s ability to make suiting fun and young, transforming a piece ostensibly meant to blend in as part of a uniform — after all, isn’t that what the flannel suits of the ’50s were supposed to be? — into a series of statement pieces. There are double-breasted short suits and razor-sharp pleats on pants that flare ever so slightly below the knee, as well as playful patterns and striking pops of colour that transform the brand’s suiting into the kind of tailoring worn by an artist or musician who’s cultivated an aura of mystery.

The idea of the modern suit has long been championed by Dior Men’s artistic director Kim Jones, whose irreverent double-breasted jackets — different from what Drake’s or Ernest W. Baker offer — have been a mainstay on award show red carpets, often paired with more relaxed trousers. For Dior Men’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection, Jones presented double-hems on both trousers and jackets; contrast detailing on pockets, stitching, and shoulders; and workwear-inspired rivets and belts.

“The kind of suiting being worn is different,” says Schlossman, citing the specific “microcosm with certain brands, where it’s sleazy in a good way. It’s more louche seventies-inspired stuff, maybe a little more flare in the trouser and a baggier, bigger fit.” Schlossman names New York-based brand Second/Layer and British imprint Basic Rights, members of that microcosm, among his current favourites, while also name-checking those who offer a more traditional, albeit modern take on tailoring: P Johnson, J. Mueser, and even Supreme, whose most recent take on the suit was a pinstripe number that many would associate with Wall Street bankers and not skaters.

Today, though, there are suits for everyone. The inherent beauty of the suit is that it can be “a base that allows you to experiment with your style,” says Hill, the Drake’s creative director. “A great suit should feel like the easiest thing in the world to wear. Something to reach for and enjoy.”

While that might not have always felt like the case, it certainly rings true today.

In stark contrast to last year, where the Gilded Glamour theme left things quite open-ended, the 2023 Met Gala delivered an ode to one of fashions modern icons. The theme of Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty left stylists far more constrained, though that didn’t stop some of the gala’s attendees from going miles over the top. Rather than focusing on the outlandish and absurd, our eyes were fixed on the many best dressed men on the carpet this year.

Ke Huy Quan — Dior

Ke Huy Quan learned a thing or two from his universe-travelling blockbuster Everything Everywhere All At Once. At the Met Gala, Quan seemed to arrive from an alternate reality in which he was Karl Lagerfeld’s personal muse; silver jewelry glazed his black tie while fingerless leather gloves exposed numerous gem-studded rings. Quan’s pinstripe Dior suit was a masterclass in tailoring, while his wrist — adorned with an Omega Speedmaster ’57 Co-Axial Master Chronometer Chronograph — fused elegance with functionality.

Idris Elba — Gucci

These days it feels like Idris Elba is swagger, personified. From his red carpet appearances, to his wonderfully polished casual fits on the street, Elba has it all dialled in and looks effortless in the process. Even this Gucci number — the cut, the curves, the collar; this is prime red carpet material that hits the Lagerfeld nods without feeling like it’s costume. After seeing some of the celebs walking into the Met Gala, more than a few could learn some lessons here.

Barry Keoghan — Burberry

One of several Met Gala freshmen that made a grand first impression, Barry Keoghan’s full Burberry suiting did not leave us wanting. The pattern, the collar, the boxy fit giving us cozy pyjama vibes; it was all smiles as Keoghan meandered across the carpet. We’ll admit, we were surprised to see that a few other attendees were clad in these same Burberry colours this year, albeit in slightly different looks and fits.

Pedro Pascal — Valentino

Pedro, Pedro, Pedro, can this man do anything wrong these days? Clad in bright red Valentino, Pascal carries a levity about him that belies the somber characters he so often portrays. If I were to nitpick, I wouldn’t have opted for the slicked back hair, but the whole package — proportions, fit, vibe — all work just the way they are.

Kristen Stewart — Chanel

The raw power of this gender-neutral look alone would be grounds for us to include Kristen Stewart in this list, but there’s so much more to this story. Well over a decade ago, Stewart became close with Lagerfeld himself, becoming one of his muses and ultimately landing as a Chanel ambassador in 2013 — a role she still holds today. The look she opted for is pulled from Chanel’s 2016 runway show in Cuba, though it still feels perfectly aligned with the current fashion moment.

Robert Pattinson — Dior

One of two of our selects where a photograph with a significant other was required, though in this particular case it wasn’t for lack of available photos of Pattinson standing solo. Somehow in nearly all of his solo shots, his left foot forward posture repeatedly hid the beauty of this asymmetric look. His Dior suiting is a classic Kim Jones drape coat, drawing on a blend of classic tailoring and something adjacent sci-fi aristocrat energy. It’s very Pattinson, and very Lagerfeld-infused, between the Chanel-esque broach and flow of the skirt drape. Now if only more photographers could have captured it in motion…

Dwyane Wade — Prada

Ex-NBA baller Dwyane Wade has been known to turn up looking quite sharp wherever he goes, and though arguably a bit understated, his Met Gala look this year easily earned him a spot amongst the year’s best dressed men. Dressed in all-black Prada, the Mandarin collar leather shirt draws the eye instantly from beneath his tailored three quarter length coat.

Rami Malek — Prada

While on the topic of low key, Rami Malek’s 2023 look proved that understated doesn’t have to mean underdressed. Malek’s white vest wrapped tightly over a simple white shirt, letting a green and silver pin steal the show. The accessories didn’t stop there; Malek’s black Cartier watch embodied the idea of “quiet luxury.”

P. Diddy — Sean John

P. Diddy’s self-titled fashion line Sean John made a splash as the musician-turned-designer’s 2023 look marked the brand’s Met Gala debut. Flowers cascaded down a jet-black cape, while gems glittered across Diddy’s suit collar. The look, daring in its darkness, paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld’s penchant for pearls while maintaining Diddy’s uniquely dramatic vision.

Jared Leto — Gucci (and a Catsuit)

No one has escaped the reporting on Leto’s Met Gala appearance; yes, he did indeed show up dressed in a full blown catsuit, paying tribute to Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette. Dramatic as it is, Leto knows no other way to arrive other than to go full on absurdist. There’s a reason he’s our only repeat best-dressed, and its entirely on account of what was beneath all the fur. This fantastic cape, dress, and trouser number — all Gucci, of course — is peak “villain of the ball”.

Pusha T — Thom Browne

Though Pusha T was another Met Gala rookie, his appearance on the red carpet made it clear that he too understood the assignment. A long-time Thom Browne wearer and friend of the brand, his look used Lagerfeld’s love of tweed at Chanel as its base, but according to a recent Vanity Fair interview, the connection to the theme was as much about persona as it was aesthetic. “There’s an energy that he gives off. A confidence. I wanted to make sure the outfit was something that I could wear with that same confidence.

Eddie Redmayne — Alexander McQueen

For years, we’ve mostly only seen Eddie Redmayne playing it safe with classic tailoring — albeit always polished — but his Met Gala look by Alexander McQueen shakes off that stodgy conservatism beautifully. The clustering of broaches and chains across the suit jacket tips a hat to Lagerfeld, as does the choice of shirt collar and tie. The cut of the trousers provides an interesting contrast, being a touch out of the ordinary without detracting from the upper half of the look.

Taika Waititi — Atelier Prabal Gurung

Can’t choose between a suit and a dress? New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi makes a convincing case for compromise. Outfitted in a floor-length overcoat accentuated by lengthy pearl chains, Waititi pushed the boundaries of convention. His high-waisted white trousers complemented the long coat; his look memorializes the ephemeral nature of a fashion sketch, its loose fabric giving the impression of gesture.

Jackson Wang — Louis Vuitton

In his Met Gala debut, K-Pop artist Jackson Wang lit up the steps. From the neck down, the star was covered in expertly-tailored black attire: the ensemble synthesized Lagerfeld’s trademark suit-and-sunglasses look with Wang’s classic fitted monochrome. From his cat-eye shades to his shiny-heeled boots and tapered trousers, Wang stunned.

Shai Gilgeous Alexander — Thom Browne

Shai Gilgeous Alexander cemented his status as a Met Gala mainstay with this year’s look. Alexander’s Thom Browne outfit didn’t shy away from Lagerfeld’s trademark layering. For outwear, he sported a custom white tweed jacket over black-and-white pouf tweed cardigan. Just beneath his high-collared white button-down, Alexander layered two necklaces (one black, one white, of course). With tuxedo trousers resting just above his shiny black boots, Alexander’s 2023 look is one for the books.

Simu Liu — Versace

We can’t recap the latest Gala without mentioning Marvel star Sims Liu (and former SHARP cover star) — from his high and tight collar to his exquisite leather gloves, Liu made a statement. Liu punctuated his classic black-and-white look with a brooch from Toni + Chloe Goutal; its antique charm accentuated the graceful look. In a suit equal parts classic and daring, it’s clear that Liu did his homework; we think Lagerfeld would approve.

Bad Bunny —Jacquemus

Not one to blend in, Bad Bunny’s Met Gala look brought a whole new meaning to the adage “business in the front, party in the back.” His white tweed suit — courtesy of French designer Jacquemus — featured a daring slit down the back, recalling deep cuts found in the designs of Lagerfeld’s eponymous label. Bad Bunny paired the suit with a blooming floral train, a motif that evokes Lagerfeld’s famous bridal dresses.

Stefon Diggs — Tommy Hilfiger

Trading his football jersey for a uniform of tweed and pearls, Stefon Diggs made an entrance. The Tommy Hilfiger suit enveloped Diggs with the drama of a thundercloud, its stormy greys framed by striking black lapels. His look captured all the glamour of Lagerfeld’s heyday while maintaining the rugged quality of Diggs’ Buffalo. A testament to Diggs’ fashion prowess, Tommy Hilfiger himself sported a matching moody suit of similar fabric and construction for his own Met Gala look.

Russell Westbrook — Bode

For one NBA star, the steps of the Met are no different from the basketball court — both settings are an opportunity for boldness. Russell Westbrook’s Bode ensemble pushed boundaries; floral buttons and black loafers framed a white cardigan (no undershirt necessary), while a pearl necklace and patterned pants completed the look.
