1. Kayne’s controversial comments explained

“Over two days of extended interviews that took place in his rented Amangani Resort home, on long walks through Jackson, and in lengthy car rides spanning eastern Idaho to Yellowstone National Park — edited excerpts from which are included below — Kanye was calm, measured, verging on beatific, and also self-aware and willing to reckon with the challenges he’d created for himself.”‘

– The New York Times

2. Look out, Fury Road

“Tesla has previously shown love for movies with the Spaceballs-inspired “Ludicrous” and “Plaid” speed modes, as well as a 007-themed Easter egg — on its cars. For the upcoming Tesla Semi, the company is pulling from a different franchise, as evidenced by the below tweet from Tesla CEO Elon Musk. It shows the console from a test vehicle with a bunch of different Autopilot settings and configurations, one of which is called “Mad Max.”‘

– Autoblog

3. ‘The Hate U Give’ powerful trailer

The Hate U Give trailer starts off like a fairly ordinary teen movie: Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg) is a high school student who likes playing basketball with her rich, white prep school friends during the week, and partying with her friends from the poor, mostly black, neighborhood on the weekends. She likes hip-hop music and joking with her friends in the car.”

– Slashfilm

4. For the love of Carbonara!

“In this video, three reputable Italian chefs are subjected to severe moral injury by being forced to watch the top five ‘how to cook carbonara’ videos on YouTube. Their emotions range between outrage, disappointment, dour amusement and absolute horror in under 13 minutes. Be sure to turn subtitles on for this one before settling in.”

– Boingboing

5. Sri Lankan jungle oasis

“Hidden on a rubber tree plantation, the Guava House is a jungle getaway in Sri Lanka. The authentic thatched-roof retreat is perched on a hilltop looking out onto the Ambuluwawa Mountains and the local paddy fields. Mango floors run throughout the five-bedroom interior that features five baths, a kitchen, and an open mezzanine. Expansive glazing provides views of the surrounding forest while folding doors expand the main living area out to an infinity swimming pool. Aside from lounging on the wrap around deck, guests can take a bike ride through the village or spend a day trekking Bible rock.”

1. Volvo opens its doors to first U.S. factory

“After breaking ground in September 2015, Volvo is ready to show the world its new factory outside of Charleston, South Carolina. The 2.3-million-square-foot factory on 1,600 acres — apparently known as “Project Thor” inside the company — will be the sole global producer of the new S60 sedan, expected to take over from the Chinese facility that currently builds it. Roughly half of the planned 60,000-unit S60 production, slated to start “late this year,” will be exported.”

2. Disney boosts Fox bid to $71.3 billion

“The Walt Disney Company has boosted its bid to acquire the bulk of 21st Century Fox, raising its offer to $71.3 billion in cash and stock. In a statement, Fox said Wednesday that the new deal is significantly better than Disney’s earlier offer and “is superior to the proposal made by the Comcast Corporation.”’

– Variety

3. XXXTentacion L.A. memorial gets shut down

“Fans of XXXTentacion gathered for a impromptu memorial service last night (June 19), following the rapper’s death. The 20-year-old was killed on Monday (June 18) after being shot while shopping for motorcycles. He later died in hospital. Police have described the suspects as two black males wearing hoodies, with the shooter wearing a red mask. They left the scene in a dark-coloured SUV after allegedly taking a Louis Vuitton bag.”

4. Get that pet selfie

“Your pet might be photogenic, but getting them to stare long enough at your camera to snap that Instagram-worthy photo isn’t as simple as telling them to sit. Bribing your pets with their favorite treat, however, might just do the trick, and with the Adjustable Pet Selfie Smartphone Attachment, you can do just that while getting those precious photos for the ‘gram. It’s available in the Boing Boing Store for $12.99.”

– Boingboing

5. The ’50s are so in

“There’s a key moment in The Wild One, the 1954 youth-ploitation movie in which an outlaw biker gang runs rampant through Hicksville USA, when a starstruck girl inquires of their ringleader, an impeccably leather-jacketed, cuff-jeaned, scuff-booted, 1950s fashion icon Marlon Brando, “Hey Johnny, what are you rebelling against?”’

1. Bey and Jay release new joint album

“It seems Beyoncé and Jay-Z might actually care about streaming numbers after all. After releasing their joint album, Everything Is Love, over the weekend initially as a Tidal exclusive, they’ve extended an olive branch to their rival streaming platforms. Everything Is Loveis now available on Spotify premium, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Google Play, iTunes, and more.”

2. Fernando Alonso is heading back to the races

“Motorsport renaissance man and two-time Formula One world champ Fernando Alonso was part of the winning No. 8 Toyota TS050 team that finally—after years of almost winning and absolute heartbreak—won Le Mans. Now that he’s got two of the three wins for the Triple Crown of Motorsport, it’s obvious where he’s heading next: Indy.”

3. Casting call: Nintendo Switch Family Showdown

“Families have the chance to compete against each other in a series of Switch title competitions hosted by the Disney Channel, according to a press release.

The Nintendo Switch Family Showdown is now open to entries from prospective families wanting to go head-to-head at the competition later this summer, which will be held in Los Angeles.”

4. Men’s fashion guide to summer 2018

“Without a little careful planning and consideration, attempting to stock a new-season wardrobe entirely from scratch is about as much fun as going to the doctor for a prostate exam. Especially when parting with significant amounts of cash.”

– Fashionbeans

5. Apple’s secret self-driving project

“Apple has hired autonomous vehicle expert and ex-Waymo engineer Jamie Waydo. Waydo worked as the head of systems engineering at Waymo and was in charge of verifying the safety of the car company’s prototype vehicles. Apple has been quietly working on its self-driving cars for a while. The last we’ve heard is that the company partnered with Volkswagen to build autonomous shuttles for Apple’s campus.”

1. Bitcoin on the descend after Coinrail hack

“It’s hard out there for people who play with imaginary money. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies plunged over the weekend after it was revealed that a South Korean exchange, Coinrail, was hacked. Roughly $42 billion of market value was destroyed in the sell-off, and Bitcoin has lost over 50 percent of its worth since December.”

– Gizmodo

2. Keep your sneaker game on point

“If the past few years in menswear have proved anything, it’s that kicks are key. So key, in fact, that 2015 saw over 9 million pairs of trainers resold at a total value of $1.2 billion, a statistic that suggests sneakers might just be the new stocks.

It’s not hard to see why. With the overarching instinct in menswear now being to loosen up, trainers are increasingly seen as acceptable, if not preferable, alternatives to ‘smarter’ footwear styles like Oxfords and Derbies. But with archive designs and limited edition packs dropping daily, even the most sleep-deprived hypebeasts can lose track of what is, and isn’t, worth copping.”

3. Job description: tape together official documents Trump rips

“Trump is notorious for his “filing system”: when he is finished with a piece of paper, he tears it into tiny pieces and throws it away, which is fine if you’re a CEO (maybe), but is radioactively illegal under the Presidential Records Act, because the President works for the public, and is required by law to archive their official papers and save them for public scrutiny.”

– Boingboing

4. Check out this dope Lego ship in a bottle

“Inspired by the real thing, the Lego Ship in a Bottle is far easier to build. The detailed ship includes several masts, cannons, captain’s quarters, and a crow’s nest, and measures over three inches tall and five inches long. A display stand with a compass and globes supports the clear brick bottle, which measures over a foot long and is finished with a buildable cork and wax seal.”

5. Louis Farrakhan racist comments lead to unverified Twitter

“Louis Farrakhan is no longer verified on Twitter.

Sometime over the weekend, the social-media giant quietly removed the Nation of Islam chief’s blue-check verification. The decision came shortly after a clip posted of Farrakhan warning about “the Satanic Jew.””

1. Another reason Issa Rae is killing the game

“Last night, Issa Rae hosted the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, where she gave a monologue that took sharp aim at Kanye West’s “slavery is a choice” comments to TMZ. “I’m about as fashionable as Kanye is black — only when it’s convenient,” she said. Then the kicker: “That joke was my choice, just like slavery.””

– Vulture

2. Don’t forget Paul Manafort, the Cloud remembers everything..

Federal prosecutors have accused Paul Manafort of witness tampering, alleging that he used WhatsApp and Telegram in an attempt to coordinate his testimony with old business associates. Manafort, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, may have thought that he was being sneaky by using encrypted chat apps, but Manafort just learned the hard way that strong encryption doesn’t really matter if you’re backing up your messages to the cloud—especially when the federal government gets a warrant to access your iCloud account.

3. This speaker is seven years in the making

“French audio experts La Boite Concept teamed up with Native Union and spent seven years perfecting the PR-01 by re-inventing a patent filed in 1976 and adapting it to the digital world. The PR-01 is wireless, with unmatched sound fidelity using two speakers (and one internal woofer) inside a multi-amplified pneumatic system.”

4. Working for David Fincher might drive you crazy

“Filmmaker David Fincher knows what he wants, and he’ll shoot as many takes as it takes to make his vision a reality. “[David] Fincher is meticulous,” John Carroll Lynch, who co-starred in Zodiac, once revealed. “He’s after something. And it takes him 50 takes to get it.” A producer on Gone Girl also stated that Fincher was shooting up to 50 takes per scene for that film as well. And now it looks like Fincher has out-done his 50-take-streak. During a FYC event for the Netflix series Mindhunter, Fincher revealed (via IndieWire) that he shot 75 takes of one nine-minute scene.”

5. It happens to the best

For the average hirsute, image-conscious man, there are no three words in the English language more likely to prompt a gulp of foreboding than … ‘male pattern baldness’. A lexical trio so follicularly frightening that some men (Jude Law, we’re looking at you) feel the best course of action is to ignore it entirely.

1. Smile, Mr. Dictator

“Russia’s Channel One aired a segment yesterday about Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s recent meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. But one part of the news broadcast was pretty weird. Take a look at Kim’s face in the screenshot on the left. Kim has been photoshopped to look like he’s smiling. And it’s not even a very good photoshop job.”

2. GM VP Mark Reuss crashes at the Indy race… before the race starts

“A 2019 Chevy Corvette ZR1 pace car crash led to a 27-minute delay of the 2018 Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle. General Motors executive vice president of global product development Mark Reuss was behind the wheel. Both the driver and passenger Mark Sand, an IndyCar official, were unharmed and exited the vehicle after the incident.”

3. The eventful career of Conan O’Brien

“Within the relatively unchanging landscape of late-night TV, Conan O’Brien has had an unusually eventful career. There were his rocky early days on Late Night, the ill-fated eight-month stint as host of The Tonight Show, and now the news that his TBS show, Conan, will move from an hour to half-hour episodes beginning in 2019. (Yes, the aforementioned events account for a small slice of an otherwise consistent — and consistently hilarious — 25 years as a late-night host, but still!)”

4. Island retreat in Washington state

“Sited in a grove of second growth cedar on an island in the state of Washington, the Whidbey Retreat is where a pair of artists get inspired. The property is made up of the main house, two artist studios, and a garage. Although surrounded by a rustic landscape, the buildings take on a contrasting industrial presence created by a palette of concrete, galvanized metal, polycarbonate, and bright primary hues. Inside, concrete floors and white walls provide a neutral interior that allows the artwork to shine. Skylights and clerestory windows along the sloped roofline wash the space with natural light while panels of glazing wrap the living areas with views of the forest and nearby meadow.”

5. The marshmallow test

“The marshmallow test is a famous psychological experiment designed by Walter Mischel in the 1960s. Kids were given a single marshmallow but told they could have another if they refrained from eating the first one for 15 minutes. The results seemed to indicate a much greater degree of self-control amongst those children who were able to delay gratification, which led to better outcomes in their lives.”

Yu Mein Chow, a 56 year old living in Queens, was found dead in the East River on May 11. Having spent $700,000 on the coveted medallion that would allow him to operate a cab in the city, he found that he just couldn’t make enough driving his cab to make it worthwhile. 1. I woke up in an old Bugatti.

“Bugatti stores a handful of historically significant cars in a picturesque building located a stone’s throw from its factory. One doesn’t blend in with the rest of the collection. It’s a small, yellow and black two-seater named Type 56 that looks more like a horseless carriage than a grand prix-winning machine. It wasn’t designed to race. Ettore Bugatti, the company’s founder, built the electric runabout in 1931 to drive on his property.”

2. Japan’s increasing indie gaming scene.

“When Shinnosuke Ohashi attended his first BitSummit in Kyoto back in 2015, he was enamored by the atmosphere and excitement of the indie community in Japan. Having not experienced the same enthusiasm in 10 years at a large company, he knew he had to become a member of the slowly growing community of Japanese indie game developers.”

4. YouTube is currently suspended in Egypt.

“Nearly six years after anti-Islam video Innocence Of Muslims became the center of an international storm, Egypt’s top court has ordered authorities to block YouTube in the country for one month. The ruling came on Saturday after a lengthy appeals process over the short film/trailer that ridicules the Prophet Mohammad and caused violent protests in Egypt and around the Muslim world in 2012.”

5. How to find the right HDMI cord for you

“It’s not your fault, but it is very likely that you’re using the wrong HDMI cord to plug that 4K Apple TV or PS4 Pro into your new TV. While you might have assumed that all HDMI cords are equal they are, unfortunately, not. And if you have the wrong cable, you could be missing out on the best features of your TV—or whatever you’re trying to plug into it. No HDR, no wide color gamut, no high frame rate for your sports and games. But don’t worry. If you know what to look for, it’s actually pretty easy to find the right cable.”

1. Ferrari SP38 should be a model for all Ferrari’s to follow

“I am sorry to say it, but I have been overwhelmingly unenthused with new Ferraris lately. They all look vaguely the same to me, with different holes and vents cut into their faces and trailing headlights that look like a person pulling their eyes up at the corners. But this new one-off Ferrari SP38? This is something I’d like to see more of.”

2. Battle of the networks

“The move sets in motion what could be one of the all-time merger battles in media. Comcast chief Brian Roberts is set to clash with Disney’s Bob Iger for control of the film and TV empire that Rupert Murdoch and sons James and Lachlan spent years building. While Disney and Fox have agreed to a $52.4 billion deal, Comcast’s counter is believed to be in the $60 billion range.”

“Sarah Silverman has compassion for Louis C.K. For Silverman’s GQ Comedy Issue profile, the magazine asked her about her friendships with three men sidelined by the #MeToo movement: C.K., Al Franken, and Aziz Ansari. Silverman’s friendship with C.K., who was accused of and admitted to masturbating in front of women without their consent, runs the longest. 4. It’s bulking season

“Projected to swell to $21bn globally by 2025, the protein supplement market is a growth industry. Shots of “gunpowder” are downed by pro athletes, massive dudes at your local gym and, increasingly, normal guys who play a bit of sport or want to get fit or be in better shape.”

1. Tony Hawk can still do 50 skateboard tricks at 50-years-old

“I never imagined being able to skate into my adult life, or that anyone would still care if I did. Thanks to all of you that made this dream possible. It’s been an unreal ride, but I’m not done yet.”

2. Around the world in 245 days

“Visiting 59 countries on 6 continents, the Viking 245-day Ultimate World Cruise is the best way to travel the globe. The journey starts in London and over the next 35 weeks, the Viking Sun will make a round trip hitting every bucket list-worthy destination along the way. Each day will bring you to a new location with stops at Reykjavík, Iceland, San Juan, Rio de Janeiro, Bora Bora, Egypt, Sydney, Hong Kong and Egypt while the 113 guided tours allow you to get the most out of every city. When you’re not at a port, your time inside the ship won’t be disappointing either. The award-winning vessel offers spacious rooms— each with its own veranda, king-size bed, private bathroom, and flat-screen TV — as well as restaurants, an infinity pool, spa, theater, cinema, and an Explorer’s Lounge serving craft beer and Scandinavian fare.”

3. Benedict Cumberbatch to star in Brexit political thriller

“The Doctor Strange actor, who is currently starring in Showtime and Sky drama Patrick Melrose, will front Brexit (w/t), a political thriller written by playwright James Graham, best known for political plays such as The Vote, as well as the recent Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? play Quiz.”

4. The Royal Wedding excitement is killing us

“So the Big Day is almost upon us. The pomp, the circumstance, the formalities, the sacraments, the solemnities, the fly-pasts, and balcony waves. And, of course, the feverish sartorial speculation. What form will The Outfit take? Surely a white option would be too outre. It obviously has to be British. It definitely can’t be too gaudy. It will almost certainly be a bespoke creation. Plunging necklines and exposed ankles are to be avoided at all costs. Yes, it’s the question on the lips of seasoned royal-watchers, style mavens and disinterested bystanders alike – what kind of suit will you, Prince Harry, opt for at the Royal Wedding?”

5. Newest Porsche 911 spy photos reveal new GT3

“The last Porsche 911 Speedster was a limited-production special that marked the end of the 997-generation 911. We’ve seen spy photos of that car’s follow-up a few times by now, each revealing a little bit more than the last. From what we can tell, the new model is essentially a drop-top version of the 991.2 Porsche 911 GT3, 500 horsepower naturally-aspirated flat-six and all.”

1. The ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ trailer will hit you in the feels

“It’s been a long and hard journey for Bohemian Rhapsody, but as they say, the show must go on. No person better embodies the lyrics to one of Queen’s final songs as a band than Freddie Mercury, the glamorous, tragic figure at the center of this biopic that’s played here by Rami Malek. It’s a daunting task to portray the legendary Queen frontman, but in the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer, it looks like Malek more than steps up to the task.”

2. Snapchat tests out unskippable ads

“Snapchat creator Snap has started testing unskippable six-second ads. The social network began the experiment on Monday, with promos for Deadpool 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S9. For the moment, Snapchat is only displaying unskippable ads on its Shows platform, which is where users can view professionally made content from brands like Disney.”

3. Spike Lee’s Cannes speech spikes anti-Trump vibe

“Last night at the Cannes Film Festival, Spike Lee unveiled his new film BlacKkKlansman, based on the unlikely true story of a black police officer who managed to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan. The movie had a gangbusters premiere and left many attendees in tears thanks to its coda: A documentary montage of the conflict in Charlottesville, astoundingly edited, that ends with a dedication to Heather Heyer, who was run down and killed when a man drove his car into a group of people protesting white nationalism.”

4. Japan continues to face whiskey shortage, a sad day for all

“Today, Suntory announced officially that sales of the Hakushu 12-year-old single malt and the Hibiki 17-year-old blend would stop for the time being. The reason? Some of Japan’s most beloved whisky releases are vanishing.”

5. Spy video for 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 shows automatic transmission

“The Ford Shelby GT500 is coming soon, and its 700 horsepower V8 should give the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and Chevy Camaro ZL1 a run for their money. Details beyond a vague horsepower rating remain scarce, but we do have a few batches of spy photos to pull from. Thanks to our trusty spy photographers, we now have a short video of a prototype with a mean idle and shifts from a automatic transmission.”
