All collections have their go-tos, from the navy blazer that looks great with everything to the classic album where every track is as good as the last. Your watch wardrobe is no different — and the steel sports watch has just the right balance of ruggedness and refinement to be your go-to any day of the week. Whether you’re suiting up for the workday or sipping Negronis by the pool, these stylish selects will never let you down.

If you were to listen to headlines alone, this category is unequivocally dominated by Rolex; that doesn’t quite paint the whole picture. It is indeed accurate that all steel Rolex sports watches have become incredibly difficult to acquire from Rolex authorized retailers — unless you have a longstanding relationship with your AD — and the waits for models like the Daytona and even the GMT-Master II can still be several years. That said, there’s absolutely no shortage of steel sports watches in the market that are also worthy of your hard-earned dollars.

In recent years the steel sports watch category has evolved dramatically. On one end of the spectrum, there’s been a huge boom in popularity of integrated bracelets, notably encouraged by the soaring secondary market prices commanded by highly collectible watches like the Patek Philippe Nautilus and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. That said, we’re seeing demand move away from those watches and towards elegant alternatives from other makers. Like many trends, collectors begin to grow weary when hype hits a threshold. Both Vacheron Constantin and Chopard, among others, have benefited greatly from this shift in tastes, as the Overseas and Alpine Eagle have become rather highly sought after of late.

There’s certainly more to the steel sports watch category than all thing integrated. After all, there’s something to be said for the versatility of a watch fitted with conventional lugs; the range of strap type and materials options are nearly boundless. Most love a good steel bracelet, but sometimes the softness of leather or the ruggedness of rubber are a better fit for the day, event, or adventure that lies ahead. As always though, our advice remains the same: always buy a watch on bracelet, as it’ll cost you more in the long run if you go back to buy it separately.

Because the category is still equal parts diverse and ubiquitous, the way the bracelet connects to the watch case is only the beginning of the conversation. Under the umbrella of sports watch, there’s still room for interpretation in regards to how dressy or casual a particular watch can be. Just looking at our layouts below, where the Aqua Terra, Commander, and Carrera can easily pass with shirt-and-tie vibes, the Polaris and Grand Seiko are more California casual at best.

OMEGA AQUA TERRA 150M CO-AXIAL MASTER CHRONOMETER 41 MM, $8,100; MIDO COMMANDER BIG DATE, $1,250; JAEGER-LECOULTRE POLARIS DATE, $11,000; TAG HEUER CARRERA, $4,000; GRAND SEIKO SPORT COLLECTION SBGM247 AUTOMATIC GMT, $7,400.
OMEGA AQUA TERRA 150M CO-AXIAL MASTER CHRONOMETER 41 MM, $8,100; MIDO COMMANDER BIG DATE, $1,250; JAEGER-LECOULTRE POLARIS DATE, $11,000; TAG HEUER CARRERA, $4,000; GRAND SEIKO SPORT COLLECTION SBGM247 AUTOMATIC GMT, $7,400.

For so long, the broader perception was that a gold watch was the pinnacle of luxury, yet now looking at market values and auction records around the globe, steel is where it’s at. When you also consider that steel watches draw less attention in places like London and Los Angeles where watch theft continues to rise, there’s all the more reason to lean towards the more “utilitarian” of metals.

The post The 19 Best Dressed Men of the Met Gala 2023 appeared first on Sharp Magazine.

]]>
In stark contrast to last year, where the Gilded Glamour theme left things quite open-ended, the 2023 Met Gala delivered an ode to one of fashions modern icons. The theme of Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty left stylists far more constrained, though that didn’t stop some of the gala’s attendees from going miles over the top. Rather than focusing on the outlandish and absurd, our eyes were fixed on the many best dressed men on the carpet this year.

Ke Huy Quan — Dior

Ke Huy Quan learned a thing or two from his universe-travelling blockbuster Everything Everywhere All At Once. At the Met Gala, Quan seemed to arrive from an alternate reality in which he was Karl Lagerfeld’s personal muse; silver jewelry glazed his black tie while fingerless leather gloves exposed numerous gem-studded rings. Quan’s pinstripe Dior suit was a masterclass in tailoring, while his wrist — adorned with an Omega Speedmaster ’57 Co-Axial Master Chronometer Chronograph — fused elegance with functionality.

Idris Elba — Gucci

These days it feels like Idris Elba is swagger, personified. From his red carpet appearances, to his wonderfully polished casual fits on the street, Elba has it all dialled in and looks effortless in the process. Even this Gucci number — the cut, the curves, the collar; this is prime red carpet material that hits the Lagerfeld nods without feeling like it’s costume. After seeing some of the celebs walking into the Met Gala, more than a few could learn some lessons here.

Barry Keoghan — Burberry

One of several Met Gala freshmen that made a grand first impression, Barry Keoghan’s full Burberry suiting did not leave us wanting. The pattern, the collar, the boxy fit giving us cozy pyjama vibes; it was all smiles as Keoghan meandered across the carpet. We’ll admit, we were surprised to see that a few other attendees were clad in these same Burberry colours this year, albeit in slightly different looks and fits.

Pedro Pascal — Valentino

Pedro, Pedro, Pedro, can this man do anything wrong these days? Clad in bright red Valentino, Pascal carries a levity about him that belies the somber characters he so often portrays. If I were to nitpick, I wouldn’t have opted for the slicked back hair, but the whole package — proportions, fit, vibe — all work just the way they are.

Kristen Stewart — Chanel

Kristen Stewart Met Gala

The raw power of this gender-neutral look alone would be grounds for us to include Kristen Stewart in this list, but there’s so much more to this story. Well over a decade ago, Stewart became close with Lagerfeld himself, becoming one of his muses and ultimately landing as a Chanel ambassador in 2013 — a role she still holds today. The look she opted for is pulled from Chanel’s 2016 runway show in Cuba, though it still feels perfectly aligned with the current fashion moment.

Robert Pattinson — Dior

Robert Pattinson met gala 2

One of two of our selects where a photograph with a significant other was required, though in this particular case it wasn’t for lack of available photos of Pattinson standing solo. Somehow in nearly all of his solo shots, his left foot forward posture repeatedly hid the beauty of this asymmetric look. His Dior suiting is a classic Kim Jones drape coat, drawing on a blend of classic tailoring and something adjacent sci-fi aristocrat energy. It’s very Pattinson, and very Lagerfeld-infused, between the Chanel-esque broach and flow of the skirt drape. Now if only more photographers could have captured it in motion…

Dwyane Wade — Prada

Ex-NBA baller Dwyane Wade has been known to turn up looking quite sharp wherever he goes, and though arguably a bit understated, his Met Gala look this year easily earned him a spot amongst the year’s best dressed men. Dressed in all-black Prada, the Mandarin collar leather shirt draws the eye instantly from beneath his tailored three quarter length coat.

Rami Malek — Prada

While on the topic of low key, Rami Malek’s 2023 look proved that understated doesn’t have to mean underdressed. Malek’s white vest wrapped tightly over a simple white shirt, letting a green and silver pin steal the show. The accessories didn’t stop there; Malek’s black Cartier watch embodied the idea of “quiet luxury.”

P. Diddy — Sean John

P. Diddy’s self-titled fashion line Sean John made a splash as the musician-turned-designer’s 2023 look marked the brand’s Met Gala debut. Flowers cascaded down a jet-black cape, while gems glittered across Diddy’s suit collar. The look, daring in its darkness, paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld’s penchant for pearls while maintaining Diddy’s uniquely dramatic vision.

Jared Leto — Gucci (and a Catsuit)

Jared Leto Met Gala

No one has escaped the reporting on Leto’s Met Gala appearance; yes, he did indeed show up dressed in a full blown catsuit, paying tribute to Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette. Dramatic as it is, Leto knows no other way to arrive other than to go full on absurdist. There’s a reason he’s our only repeat best-dressed, and its entirely on account of what was beneath all the fur. This fantastic cape, dress, and trouser number — all Gucci, of course — is peak “villain of the ball”.

Pusha T — Thom Browne

Pusha T Met Gala
Photo Credit: Jamie McCarthy / Staff via Getty Images

Though Pusha T was another Met Gala rookie, his appearance on the red carpet made it clear that he too understood the assignment. A long-time Thom Browne wearer and friend of the brand, his look used Lagerfeld’s love of tweed at Chanel as its base, but according to a recent Vanity Fair interview, the connection to the theme was as much about persona as it was aesthetic. “There’s an energy that he gives off. A confidence. I wanted to make sure the outfit was something that I could wear with that same confidence.

Eddie Redmayne — Alexander McQueen

eddie redmayne met gala
Photo Credit: Jamie McCarthy / Staff via Getty Images

For years, we’ve mostly only seen Eddie Redmayne playing it safe with classic tailoring — albeit always polished — but his Met Gala look by Alexander McQueen shakes off that stodgy conservatism beautifully. The clustering of broaches and chains across the suit jacket tips a hat to Lagerfeld, as does the choice of shirt collar and tie. The cut of the trousers provides an interesting contrast, being a touch out of the ordinary without detracting from the upper half of the look.

Taika Waititi — Atelier Prabal Gurung

Taika Watiti met gala
Photo Credit: Jamie McCarthy / Staff via Getty Images

Can’t choose between a suit and a dress? New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi makes a convincing case for compromise. Outfitted in a floor-length overcoat accentuated by lengthy pearl chains, Waititi pushed the boundaries of convention. His high-waisted white trousers complemented the long coat; his look memorializes the ephemeral nature of a fashion sketch, its loose fabric giving the impression of gesture.

Jackson Wang — Louis Vuitton

In his Met Gala debut, K-Pop artist Jackson Wang lit up the steps. From the neck down, the star was covered in expertly-tailored black attire: the ensemble synthesized Lagerfeld’s trademark suit-and-sunglasses look with Wang’s classic fitted monochrome. From his cat-eye shades to his shiny-heeled boots and tapered trousers, Wang stunned.

Shai Gilgeous Alexander — Thom Browne

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander MET GALA

Shai Gilgeous Alexander cemented his status as a Met Gala mainstay with this year’s look. Alexander’s Thom Browne outfit didn’t shy away from Lagerfeld’s trademark layering. For outwear, he sported a custom white tweed jacket over black-and-white pouf tweed cardigan. Just beneath his high-collared white button-down, Alexander layered two necklaces (one black, one white, of course). With tuxedo trousers resting just above his shiny black boots, Alexander’s 2023 look is one for the books.

Simu Liu — Versace

We can’t recap the latest Gala without mentioning Marvel star Sims Liu (and former SHARP cover star) — from his high and tight collar to his exquisite leather gloves, Liu made a statement. Liu punctuated his classic black-and-white look with a brooch from Toni + Chloe Goutal; its antique charm accentuated the graceful look. In a suit equal parts classic and daring, it’s clear that Liu did his homework; we think Lagerfeld would approve.

Bad Bunny —Jacquemus

Not one to blend in, Bad Bunny’s Met Gala look brought a whole new meaning to the adage “business in the front, party in the back.” His white tweed suit — courtesy of French designer Jacquemus — featured a daring slit down the back, recalling deep cuts found in the designs of Lagerfeld’s eponymous label. Bad Bunny paired the suit with a blooming floral train, a motif that evokes Lagerfeld’s famous bridal dresses.

Stefon Diggs — Tommy Hilfiger

Stefon Diggs Met Gala
Photo Credit: Jamie McCarthy / Staff via Getty Images

Trading his football jersey for a uniform of tweed and pearls, Stefon Diggs made an entrance. The Tommy Hilfiger suit enveloped Diggs with the drama of a thundercloud, its stormy greys framed by striking black lapels. His look captured all the glamour of Lagerfeld’s heyday while maintaining the rugged quality of Diggs’ Buffalo. A testament to Diggs’ fashion prowess, Tommy Hilfiger himself sported a matching moody suit of similar fabric and construction for his own Met Gala look.

Russell Westbrook — Bode

For one NBA star, the steps of the Met are no different from the basketball court — both settings are an opportunity for boldness. Russell Westbrook’s Bode ensemble pushed boundaries; floral buttons and black loafers framed a white cardigan (no undershirt necessary), while a pearl necklace and patterned pants completed the look.

The post Messika Taps Alton Mason to Front Men’s Jewelry Line For The First Time appeared first on Sharp Magazine.

]]>
Over the last 18 years, Valérie Messika’s Paris-based jewelry brand has been growing in leaps and bounds. Born from the knowledge passed down by her famed diamond dealer father André, what started as a contemporary and accessible jewelry line has transformed into a all-encompassing Maison that consistently tap celebs of runway, stage, and screen fame. With collabs with Gigi Hadid and Kate Moss, and appearing on the red carpet looks of Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Charlize Theron (to name a few), it’s safe to say that Messika has built up a strong following in a relatively brief span of time.

Having the women’s jewelry bracket well looked after, Valérie has set her eyes on the men’s jewelry category in the last two years. While the first run included a brief appearance by Swiss-French F1 driver Romain Grosjean, this latest cinematic campaign puts Alton Mason front and centre alongside Kendall Jenner.

The Spring 2023 campaign, shot out in the Palm Springs desert by Chris Colls, delivers an interesting juxtaposition between both the jewelry for each gender, as well as between the two leads. Part Thelma and Louise, part Tarantino flick, part sci-fi, the new men’s collection by Messika melds the typical conservative men’s staple jewelry with a number of the category’s current trends (stacked bracelets, anyone?).

messika move bangle

There are a handful of pieces that immediately jumped out when taking a closer look at the campaign — including the Men’s Move Titanium Bangle, which is offered in brushed, graphite, and black finishes. As the name may have already made clear, the three diamonds in each bangle are floating in the titanium cut-out, allowing them to move freely up and down the front slot of the bangle.

If solid titanium is less your speed, the My Move bracelet places the same floating diamond cut-out onto a smaller plate, affixed to a multi-wrap leather bracelet. This is where the customization factor comes into play, as the My Move is offered on over a dozen different leather colors/types, and with nine different metal options for the plate front (including white, pin, and yellow gold, with or without a pavé diamond setting.

As men’s jewelry continues to inch its way back into the limelight, it’s clear that Messika’s newest efforts have a firm grip on where the category is heading, and with a fresh face leading the campaign we’re eager to see what comes next.

Springtime forecasts make downpour defence top of mind. Although riding out the storm may be one way to do it, making the right style choices reigns supreme. Layer up with proper rain gear, and pare down with a warmer base to ensure comfort during this transitory period. To combat Mother Nature’s bleakest natural colours, inject some vibrant tones into your wardrobe, easing the gloom of the day’s cloud coverage. Rest assured that UV rays are on the horizon — but in the meantime, battle the haze with bright, practical, and water-resistant gear.

Starting with a very fresh drop — one that hits stores this coming Saturday in alignment with Earth Day — Timberland tapped Christopher Raeburn for a fantastic collab using PFC-free materials all while maintaining its DWR (durable water repellency). Environmentally friendly and suitable for wet environments, we’re marking this one as a proper win-win. ($300)

The bucket is back big time, there’s no doubt about that, and with wetter weather looming it’s one of the better headwear solutions when carrying an umbrella isn’t in the cards. This example from Louis Vuitton leans in on the ’90s vibe, adding a neon drawstring to brighten its overall aesthetic. ($930)

This isn’t the first time Dior’s new Saddle bag shape has made it into our favourites list, however the swap to waterproof Cordura nylon made it a perfect fit for the topic at hand. In this form, the bag takes on a nominally more technical character, without losing any of its charm. ($3,400)

Moncler Acqua Hi Rain Boots

Most footwear will be moving to thinner materials as we head to warmer weather, however we’ll always recommend having a good rain boot on hand — especially one that’s this level of weatherproof. Equal parts hikercore, futurist, and utilitarian, Moncler’s Acqua Hi will fit in in all but the most formal of settings.

Glashütte Original SeaQ Chronograph

When it comes to wetter weather, not all wristwatches are created equal. We’re the first to admit that a watch with 300m of water resistance might be overkill; okay, it’s definitely overkill. Part of the charm of the SeaQ chronograph is the added over-engineering that goes into giving it that depth rating, in combination with the high level of fit and finish that Glashütte Original is known for. ($17,100)

Fulton Stormshield Umbrella

Obviously a good umbrella had to make the cut, and we’re always of the mentality that umbrellas aren’t meant to be boring. This simple checkerboard example is the right addition to your rain gear assortment; its fibreglass construction and mid-height venting will ensure it can endure the worst of weather conditions. ($40)

Strellson Light Summer Parka

Rain slicker, but make it fashion; this is the name of the game with this 3/4 length rain parka from Strellson. The hooded jacket is made of partially recycled technical fabric, and as we see above, pairs nicely with crisp summer whites. ($748)

The lead-up to summer deserves colour, even if its the faintest pop on a wrist cuff. Leave it to Hermès to offer up plenty of options to fit the bill, including this latest variant of the Glenan H bracelet. The joy of spring — at least in most parts of Canada — is not knowing whether you’re going to get warm sun or a rainstorm that lingers just above freezing. Beneath the umbrella and rain gear mentioned above, a nice warm stole will keep your neck nice and toasty. ($710)

Behind the Curtain — A Look At The Latest Releases From Watches And Wonders https://sharpmagazine.com/2023/04/05/watches-and-wonders-2023-with-maison-birks/ Wed, 05 Apr 2023 11:24:06 +0000 https://sharpmagazine.com/?p=134857 SHARP's latest video series with Maison Birks takes you behind the scenes.

The post Behind the Curtain — A Look At The Latest Releases From Watches And Wonders appeared first on Sharp Magazine.

]]>
Put simply, Watches and Wonders is a wild time — especially for members of the press. Walking through the hall doors that first morning, even the most astute veteran with a meticulous sense of organization can’t always be fully prepared for the world’s largest luxury watch fair. Between the flurry of meetings, photoshoot bookings, press conferences, and keynote speeches, the fair brings together all facets of the luxury watch world.

This year SHARP did things a bit differently, as we teamed up with Maison Birks — one of Canada’s leading and longest-standing luxury watch retailers — producing a series of videos that take watch enthusiasts inside the booths of some of the industry’s leading brands, for a closer look at their newest releases. All of the brands seen below are carried by Maison Birks, and there are plenty of timepieces from each of these brands in store and available to shop now.

Jaeger LeCoultre

Reverso chronograph
Watch The Video

Jaeger LeCoultre leaned on the Reverso as primary line to highlight in 2023, and while there were many options to consider, the new Reverso Tribute Chronograph is the one we all want. Taking its roots from a similar chronograph from 1996, there have long been wonders about whether or not the practical complication would make its way back to the Reverso. To the untrained eye a chronograph seems rather run-of-the-mill, however it’s the specifics of this execution that give it its charm. To fit into a Reverso casing, it’s not a case of wedging a conventional round movement into a rectangular watch — that would be too easy. Instead, Jaeger LeCoultre went back to the drawing board, and conceived a modern rectangular chronograph caliber (based on the one used those decades ago). It in turn makes sense that the brand would leave the chronograph visible via an open dial, allowing its wearer to appreciate its construction and finishing.

Tudor Watches

Tudor Black Bay 54
Watch The Video

Tudor has spent the last several years with a clear focus on the “watch enthusiast” end of the market segment, and this year’s hero release doubles down on that position. The Black Bay 54 — whose nomenclature takes its roots from the original Tudor dive watch that launched in 1954 — is a perfect example of modern-meets-vintage design harmony. It’s 37mm in diameter and can be purchased on a brushed steel rivet-style bracelet, but in turn the brand also offers up an integrated rubber strap for those desiring a bit more utility. Both are fitted with the brand’s micro-adjustment clasp, ensuring a perfect fine-tuned fit. This is by no means a release the reinvents the wheel for Tudor, but one that fills a gap in the modern luxury dive watch offering in a way that will appeal to nearly everyone.

TAG Heuer

TAG Heuer Glassbox
Watch The Video

Being the 60th anniversary of the TAG Heuer Carrera this year, the brand has been pulling out all the stops with its new releases. While some have been enjoying the true-to-original Carrera chronographs, it’s the Carrera Chronograph “Glassbox” models that stole our heart. These references look more modern than many of their counterparts, however the extension of the domed sapphire crystal out to the utmost edge of the case is in fact a nod to chronographs made by the brand in the ’60s and ’70s. At present, a blue version as well as a black and white reverse-panda dial are on offer, alongside a 42mm variant that replaces its running seconds subdial with an openworked tourbillon at the six o’clock position.

Grand Seiko

Grand Seiko Chronograph
Watch The Video

We never truly know what to expect from Grand Seiko, as the brand has a knack for appearing at industry shows with a slew of surprises. Much like many releases this year, we’re not talking about some sort of ultra complex and rare timepiece costing six figures, but rather a wonderful execution of a type of watch that many have been hoping for for years. The Grand Seiko Tentagraph is a culmination of years of the brand’s expertise. Masterful dial and case craftsmanship, impeccable accuracy, and in this case the addition of a complication to the brand’s repertoire we’ve not yet seen. For years the only chronograph available from Grand Seiko was a watch that used one of the brand’s ingenious Spring Drive calibers. Wanting to ensure that it could live up to the brand’s exacting accuracy standards, it took until 2023 for the Tentagraph to come to market. Accurate to +5/-3 seconds per day (a hair under the Swiss COSC certification), the high-frequency chronograph runs at 10 beats per second, all while still delivering a 72-hour power reserve; with specs like these, the new watch was absolutely worth the wait.

Panerai

Panerai annual calendar
Watch The Video

We’ve been expecting a refresh of Panerai’s Radiomir line, but that’s not to say that this year’s releases from the brand didn’t come with any surprises. In particular, the addition of an Annual Calendar complication to the classic model was an unexpected win, as it adds the indication of the month to an outer rotating disc on the dial (as shown in our video). Alongside these substantive additions — being offered in Goldtech (Panerai’s proprietary rose gold formulation) with a blue dial as seen above, as well as in steel with a fumé red dial — the brand also took big steps in adding to the Radiomir’s core collection as well. A handful of new references bring the Radiomir’s case size down to 40mm to suit the downsizing trends we’ve seen in the market these last few years.

Over the years, we’ve gotten used to the idea of Hennessy — the legendary cognac producer and the H of the beloved luxury conglomerate group LVMH — participating in collaborative launches with artists, musicians, and other pop culture note-worthies in order to release limited-edition bottles of the beloved spirit. This latest release with Kim Jones (of Dior and Fendi fame) goes beyond the bottle, pairing it with an exclusive pair of limited edition sneakers known as the HNY Low By Kim Jones.

At first glance, the HNY Low is not flashy or attention-grabbing in the least. A simple rich cognac-coloured nubuck leather is used from tip to tail, with a matching rubber sole. The sole hides the first of its sneaky design cues — the imprint of cognac vines, and the Hennessy X.O x Kim Jones logo are placed on its underside, and the Hennessy bras armé emblem discreetly lurks on the heel. The closer you look at the sneaker’s silhouette and design details, the more you’re also likely to notice subtle details that draw inspiration from the X.O bottle that Jones also penned as part of this collab.

hennessy kim jones decanter

The same way the vessel that carries Hennessy’s fine spirits requires detailed attention, the packaging for these limited edition sneakers get an equally rich treatment. The wooden box is made of the same oak that makes the brand’s cognac aging casks, and the shoes come sheathed in cotton dust bags bound by a high-end drawstring, a shape recalling bottles that used to be wrapped in thick paper during travel. This is the same inspiration that flowed into Jones’ X.O Masterpiece decanter (which has the same shape as the X.O bottle seen above).

“When I saw how the vintage Hennessy bottles were wrapped, it spoke volumes to me about how precious each one is, and how they were handled. I was particularly touched by their history, and the sense of how generations have dedicated their time to making each step of the process better and better. That same process also holds true with fashion.” says Jones.

If you are hoping you get your hands on the sneakers — or the Masterpiece decanter, for that matter — you’re best to move fast. Only 200 of the decanters, and an unspecified run of sneakers will be in the market for a limited time only.

A little over a year past the substantive rebrand of BOSS, celebrities, media, and brand loyalists alike waited with bated breath as they took their seats for the BOSS Spring/Summer Fashion Show at Miami’s Herald Plaza last night. Staged in dark and watery wonderland, what proceeded to stream down the runway was a dialled-in juxtaposition of the brand’s sharp tailoring, and the incorporation of fabrics and styles that embraced fluidity and movement. Adding to the excitement, this runway show was unveiled in a “see now, buy now” format, so what you see below is immediately available via BOSS’ ecommerce platform.

It was certainly a star-studded walk for BOSS as several celebs, including Naomi Campbell, Pamela Anderson, Law Roach, Khaby Lame, DJ Khaled, Jordan Barrett, Caleb Williams and several others walked in the liquid-inspired show. That said, no amount of celebrity could overshadow BOSS’ new energy. The new collections showcased a lightweight, crinkled approach to materials, made up of a mix of buttery silks and smooth nylons that are pressed and enriched with a layer of colour.

Perhaps unintentionally, the show delivered its own sort of “come to Jesus” moment (sans religiosity), as seeing the entirety of this runway being walked on water — quite literally — felt present, and current. The show combined looks for both men and women, yet there were countless examples that stood out as pure and proper genderless fashion statements. We’re here for it.

What You Need To Know About The New 2024 Volvo EX90 Electric SUV https://sharpmagazine.com/2023/03/15/2024-volvo-ex90-first-look-gallery/ Wed, 15 Mar 2023 16:36:48 +0000 https://sharpmagazine.com/?p=134520 A 3-row all electric SUV from Volvo will be here next year.

]]>
With production anticipated for Q4 of this year, there’s a lot of buzz circulating about Volvo’s first big Electric SUV. The 2024 Volvo EX90 is a substantive three-row seven seater SUV is the brand’s latest step towards its all-electric future, and a select cluster of Canadian journalists were provided the opportunity to take an up close and personal look at the pre-production model this past week to get a better sense of what’s to come. We’ll have much more to say when the first drive events start to happen, but for now, here’s the 411.

By The Numbers

When looking at something of this size and stature, the primary questions are always the same. Standing roughly the same size as the brand’s flagship XC90, the EX90 EV is set to deliver up to 480 kilometres of range on a single charge, with the ability to charge from 10% to 80% battery in as little as 30 minutes depending on the output of the available charging station at the time. It’ll be offered in a Twin Motor configuration offering 402 horsepower, and a Twin Motor Performance variant with 496 horsepower. Though large in stature, that should still be plenty to deliver a spirited drive.

All About Tech

Regardless of propulsion, any major SUV from a premium brand is destined to be laden with bells and whistles, and the EX90 is no exception. The brand’s touchscreen infotainment systems remain some of the best in the business when it comes to user experience, and everything you can imagine is controlled via the touchscreen display. There is a single play/pause/volume knob on the console, but it’s almost as if that was added as a design detail rather than anything else.

Of course, Volvo tech isn’t just about navigation and music playback. The brand has long been known for its impeccable safety systems, and the EX90 is fitted with Volvo’s latest and greatest Lidar and Safe Space Technology. For those wondering, Lidar is short for Light Detection and Ranging — a technology based on the principles of radar that uses laser light for 3D mapping of environments/surroundings. To quote Volvo: “The advanced standard exterior sensor set with radars, cameras and ultrasonic sensors is in Volvo EX90 complemented with a lidar that continuously scan the environment in front of the car, enabling an accurate and high-precision estimate of the shape and size of objects in three-dimensional understanding of the surroundings.”

2024 Volvo EX90

An Animated and Very Swedish Experience

Looking at the overall design of this new electric SUV, two things were readily apparent. Aesthetically, it’s what we can only describe as very Volvo. The lines, the proportions, the extremely sleek and design-forward interior — every last detail screams Scandinavian design. That said, there are a couple of especially playful elements that are worthy of their own little moment. Up front, you’ll first notice Volvo’s more recent LED headlight design, known as Thor’s Hammer. Where it gets interesting is that these are not static — when you cycle to high and low beams, the hammers open to reveal additional lights behind this frame. You can see what we mean in the video shared on the SHARP Instagram feed.

Around back, if you look at the top of the open tailgate, you’ll notice something that immediately brings to mind an Ikea instruction manual. Those who drive larger vehicles like the EX90 often find themselves moving or hauling an assortment of larger and oddly sized goods, rather than just passengers. To help with this, the diagram seen above provides the dimensions of the cargo area (both the second and third row fold flat, FYI).

Though there’s been some speculation on pricing — media in the US are suggesting an entry price of around $80,000 USD — the details for the Canadian market are still yet to come. We’ll be sure to keep our readers up to date as the EX90 gets ready to hit the market.

SHARP Drinks: The Best Irish Whiskey To Sip and Savour Today https://sharpmagazine.com/2023/03/14/best-irish-whiskey/ Tue, 14 Mar 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://sharpmagazine.com/?p=119122 Contrary to popular belief, Irish whiskey is not just a seasonal treat.

The post SHARP Drinks: The Best Irish Whiskey To Sip and Savour Today appeared first on Sharp Magazine.

]]>
Yes, it’s almost Saint Patrick’s Day again (where did the last year go?), but just because it’s timely doesn’t mean this is the only excuse to talk about Irish whiskey. Yes, that’s an ey like the yankees, rather than whisky as spoken by Canadian, Japanese, and Scottish producers. Contrary to what green-clad parade and party-goesrs may try to convince you this coming Friday, Irish whiskey is not some flash-in-the-pan novelty that’s meant to be consumed once a year. Often overshadowed by their Scottish counterparts, Irish whiskeys are arguably just as diverse.

The first recorded production of Irish whiskey dates back to 1405, which is about 90 years before the first Scottish whisky, for those keeping count. Ireland’s tumultuous history had its part in tamping down the growth of the industry, yet as of six or seven years ago, Irish whiskey took hold as the fastest growing spirit on the planet. As with many spirits, the more entry-level offering is what springs to mind first (Jameson, et al), but the premium Irish whiskey category is filled with smooth and sippable options that can be enjoyed neat or on ice. It would be a lengthy list to try and cover off every possible available option, so for the sake of brevity, we’ve narrowed it down to some of our team’s personal favourites.

Tullamore Dew XO Rum Finish Irish Whiskey

TULLAMORE DEW XO RUM FINISH
Learn More

Granted, we’re starting things off with a rather unorthodox Irish whiskey, but with good reason. Tullamore Dew’s standard whiskey is a good one to begin with, however the added character due to the Carribean rum casks make this offering stand out from the pack. Notes of vanilla and butterscotch are prevalent, to the point of blurring the lines between the two spirits in the best possible way. ($47)

Bushmills 10-Year Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Bushmills 10 Year Whiskey Bottle
Learn More

Bushmills is the oldest Irish whiskey producer there is, and their years of history are reflected in the quality and diversity of their offerings. It’s worth noting, they’re one of only a handful of producers from Ireland that survived the struggles that came with American prohibition. This 10-year-old single malt is triple distilled from 100 per cent malted barley, and matured for 10-plus years in former sherry and bourbon-seasoned casks. Expect honey, vanilla, and chocolate aromas here. ($47)

Redbreast 15 Year Old Irish Whiskey

Redbreast 15 Year Old Irish Whiskey
Learn more

It’s understandable that some will always prefer a more classic approach — this is where Redbreast comes in. The company’s roots date back to the late 1850s, but to be fair, it was a tumultuous journey as the company shifted hands multiple times. What really matters is its current ownership, which rebooted the brand in 1991 and launched their first 15-year single pot still whiskey in 2005. It was an award winner in its opening year, and remains a fan favourite now, delivering complex notes of citrus and spice. ($125)

Clonakilty Single Batch Double Oak Irish Whiskey

clonakilty irish whiskey
Learn More

Now that we have the “standards” out of the way, it’s time for something rather new. Clonakilty has been in the business for all of seven years so far, and while they’re not necessarily dethroning the most legendary Irish whiskies of all time, they’re certainly providing a delectable alternative to your usual standard selects. While the brand call this offering double oak on account of using wood from both Europe and America, they actually use three different barrel types during the maturation process, specifically ex-Bourbon casks, new charred American oak casks, and ex-red wine casks from Bordeaux. ($78)

Glendalough Whiskey 7 Year Old Single Malt Mizunara

glendalough 7
Learn More

Most recently we’ve heard whispers about Glendalough’s new Gin releases, but their single malts are still where it’s at until we’re able to sip their new clear spirit. If we have to pick one, this seven year Mizunara cask finished whiskey is the way to go — the vibrance of its floral-meets-cinnamon-meets-subtle smoke profile ticks all the right boxes, as far as we’re concerned ($130)

Teeling Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Teeling Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey
Learn More

Another interesting history lesson in the Irish whiskey scene: when relaunched in 2015, Teeling was the first whiskey distillery to operate within the city limits of Dublin in roughly 125 years. It’s also one that is still run by members of the original founding family. The brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling are the leaders behind the reboot, having gotten into the whiskey world through their father John, who founded the Cooley distillery in 1987. Using a very typical Irish mash in its production (50 per cent malted barley and 50 per cent unmalted barley), the end result is a smooth and richly charactered whiskey, with notes of fresh baked bread, brown sugar, and hints of grape and honey. ($105)

Jameson Black Barrel Irish Whiskey

Jameson Black Barrel Irish Whiskey
Learn More

You all knew that Jameson would wind up in the mix here somewhere — the “household name” of Irish whiskies is a bit pedestrian in standard guise, but their premium efforts remain worthy of recommendation. In the case of the Black Barrel, you’re looking at one of the richer, heavier offerings in this list. Strong notes of sherry, nutmeg, oak, and dry fruit lead the charge, while still avoiding any of the peaty smokiness found in whiskies from other regions. Though a step up from the standard, Black Barrel is still on the affordable end of the spectrum. ($48)

Writers’ Tears Japanese Cask Finish

Writers' Tears Copper Pot Mizunara Irish Whiskey
Learn More

Originally launched as a limited travel retail edition for the Rugby World Cup, this special edition from Writers’ Tears has since made it into international distribution for a limited time. Unlike the brand’s standard editions, this release is finished in Japanese Mizunara casks (like the Glendalough mentioned above), which bring forth a punch of exotic wood notes — sandalwood, oak, and cedar — before giving way to more typical toffee, coconut, and spice notes. ($140)

Dunville’s PX 10YO Single Malt Irish Whiskey

dunville px 10 irish whiskey
Learn More

Another peculiar edition to the list is this 10 year old “PX” aged Irish whiskey fro Dunville’s. For those wondering, PX stands for Pedro Ximinez — the grape used for most sherry and dessert wines from Spain. This leads to a smoother malt profile, notes of green apple, and a substantial sherry influence that thankfully doesn’t overpower the spirit. Can be a good stand-in substitute for bourbon when mixing Old Fashioneds, but we’d still stick to a neat pour, given the option. ($171)

Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey

proper no twelve irish whiskey
Learn More

Rare releases and special processes aside, sometimes a good “standard” whiskey is all your bar really needs. Enter Proper No. Twelve, Conor McGreggor’s Irish whiskey outfit named after his home neighbourhood in Dublin. With the help of former Bushmills distillery manager David Elder, the outfit has been off to a solid start. It’s got a bit more punch than Tullamore, but rests more understated than Jameson. ($35)

‘Tis the season of stars dressed to the nines and this year’s Academy Awards did not disappoint. While Everything Everywhere All at Once swept the Oscars with no less than seven wins, the year’s best dressed men of the Oscars came from all corners of the industry. Much like what we saw in our recap of last year’s Met Gala, classic tuxes never go out of style, but stylists and designers clearly weren’t afraid to have a little fun with fits, proportions, and textures when putting together these champagne carpet-ready looks.

Danny Ramirez, a SHARP alum, turned up at the Oscars in a wonderfully understated black-on-black look from Dior and sporting and Omege De Ville wristwatch. It’s quite the departure from his casual style from our recent photoshoot and interview, but we’re not mad about it.

Idris Elba in Gucci

These days it seems Elba can do no wrong, whether it’s hitting the Oscars champagne carpet in Gucci, or stomping around New York in a pair of their GG sneakers. The man is sharp 24/7, and we’re always keeping tabs on who and what he’s wearing next.

Barry Keoghan in Louis Vuitton

Though he lost out on a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin, Keoghan turned up in one of the more interesting tuxes of last night’s festivities. The sharp Louis Vuitton number was complemented (once again) by an Omega watch — this time an Omega Golbemaster, to be precise.

Harry Shum Jr. in Adeam and Christian Louboutin

Speaking of interesting and unorthodox, this navy-trimmed cream tux jacket and navy silk obi belt from Adeam paired with Louboutin patent leather? Harry Shum Jr. came to the carpet with confidence last night.

Lenny Kravitz in Saint Laurent

How to talk about Kravitz in this Saint Laurent look other than “Lenny gonna Lenny”. It’s rocker chic in a manner the man has perfected over the years, and it’s one that works from carpet to stage and back again. Though not pictured, the surprise was his choice of a very understated and elegant Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso as his wristwatch of choice.

Austin Butler in Saint Laurent

Austin Butler in Saint Laurent

Austin Butler bucked trends in Saint Laurent this year; in a time where loose and comfortable fit tailoring seems to be the new norm, Butler appeared on the carpet in an extremely sharp and trim fit. From the squared shoulders to the pant hem, there’s a precision to this look that reminds us of past aesthetics, and perhaps speaks of what’s to come. If so, let Butler lead the charge.

Paul Mescal in Gucci

Paul Mescal in Gucci

In stark contrast to Butler, Paul Mescal’s Gucci fit has relaxed retro vibes, all while still remaining a feast of attention to detail. That hovering-a-hair-off-the-ground pant hem sits right where it belongs, and the slightly long cut of the tux jacket? Chef’s kiss.

Andrew Garfield in Fendi

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with playing the classics, and Andrew Garfield’s look by Fendi does precisely that. Patent leather dress shoes, a clean double-breasted tux, and a classic Omega De Ville Trésor watch all come together in perfect unfussed harmony.

Eat, Drink, & Chill Like a Local in Nice, France https://sharpmagazine.com/2023/02/23/nice-france-guide-2023-food-and-drink/ Thu, 23 Feb 2023 20:07:49 +0000 https://sharpmagazine.com/?p=133970 In the dead of winter, why not look ahead to your next vacation?

The post Eat, Drink, & Chill Like a Local in Nice, France appeared first on Sharp Magazine.

]]>
On the list of places that still evokes warm memories and pangs of wanderlust, few European cities hit quite like the mediterranean port town of Nice. Yes, Nice can at times be filled with tourists — often Brits and Eastern Europeans — but so can any little corner of paradise on the Med. The days where one could find an untrodden gem on any corner of its coast are long gone, for which we can mostly thank the blogosphere and social media.

All that in mind, these better known destinations certainly aren’t “ruined” by having an economy fed by tourism; it’s quite the contrary, really. Bars, restaurants, and other entertainment venues are cropping up more and more frequently in places where they previously may have been unlikely to survive.

Back in 2022 I was fortunate enough to return and explore the city after a decade of hiatus, prior to which, the city had been a regular and frequent destination. As a Torontonian, sitting at my desk facing as yet another winter blizzard takes settles in, it seemed as good a time as any to reflect on warmer times, and daydream of another trek to the Côte d’Azur. While not a tip-to-tail guide (we’d rather you embrace the adventure and explore unguided), consider this your handful of “must eat/drink/visit” stops on your next trip.

One of the things you’ll immediately notice as you drive along the waterfront from the airport is the sheer volume of serviced beach properties in Nice. While some are standalone businesses, offering lounge chair rentals, drinks, and snacks, others — like the Plage Beau Rivage — are tied to hotel properties in the city. I’ve hopped from one beach to the other over many a visit, and without a doubt the Plage Beau Rivage blows its competition out of the water. Better food, better drinks, better service, DJs playing beach house sets on many afternoon/evenings, the Beau Rivage just does things different. It’s also one of the only beaches (perhaps even the only beach) that offers rentable private cabanas, which are absolutely worth the splurge.

Tucked into a space that almost looks abandoned on a corner of Rue de la Buffa, Pablo Bar was one of the best little surprises the city provided on my last visit. The covert cocktail bar takes the overplayed “speakeasy” model and flips it on its head, delivering a vibe you’d expect if it had been Pablo Escobar’s secret hideaway in Nice. Even though it runs adjacent the city’s tourist-laden pedestrian zone, Pablo Bar is more of a spot for locals.

Another relative newcomer, Le Canon delivers an impeccable locally-sourced farm to table menu paired with one of the more extensive organic and biodynamic wine lists I’ve seen in ages. Its small crew of staff are incredibly well-versed in what’s on offer, so don’t shy away from asking for recommendations — a lot of the wines don’t see export outside of France. It’s not especially easy to get a table, so you’re best to try for a reservation ahead of travel if you can.

There’s no building more iconic on the French Riviera than the Negresco Hotel, and no more legendary a restaurant in Nice than Le Chantecler, which graces the hotel’s main floor. The room itself and the level of service it provides is a time capsule of a bygone era of luxury, and the dichotomy created between this and its modern fine dining menu makes for a remarkable and memorable experience. After a change in staffing, the restaurant moved from two Michelin stars to one, but under the guidance of Chef Virginie Basselot there’s little doubt the second star will be reclaimed before long.

Making the case for Le Plongeoir is going to be debated by some, but the location and view combined with a healthy wine list and a great meal means it’s still deserving of recognition. Over a century ago, someone had the peculiar idea of building a fake ship on a little coastal rock spire. Much more recently (ahead of its opening in 2015), the iconic outpost was rebuilt into the stunning outdoor dining location that thrives to this day. It’s by no means a “hidden gem”, but rather an icon for good reason.

When you drive some cars, there’s an instantaneous “I get it” or “I know how I need to frame this” that strikes somewhere along the drive. With others, the path isn’t always so obvious, and staring at the new Wrangler Rubicon 392 after a couple of weeks at the wheel, it was clear that this brutish behemoth was one of the latter. That’s not to say that it’s not a capable vehicle, or that I didn’t have a toddler giggle-inducing good time driving it — it is, and I did. The real issue at hand is how to contextualize a vehicle as obscure and unorthodox as this, but at the same time it’s no more niche than the countless other six-figure cars on the road today; this one just comes in slightly different packaging.

A Value Proposition(ish)

To some, the Rubicon 392 ticks the boxes of a “budget” Mercedes G-Wagon, saying budget solely on account of the base sticker prices being roughly $70,000 apart. In case you’re wondering, the base price of the Rubicon 392 is $110,640, and the G 550 starts at $174,900. The base G-Wagon is the closest comparison to the Rubicon, and with that price tag also comes an advantage in power (delivering 470 horsepower compared to 416) and speed (4.5 seconds from 0-100 versus 5.9 seconds in the Merc). No, a Wrangler-to-Benz comparison is not a fair one for those with any kind of attachment to brand identity, nor are they equals in the areas of purported status and perceived luxury. That said, both vehicles carry a similar stature and attitude when rolling down the street — the tall and imposing rolling bricks both carry with them a sightly menacing demeanour, and symphonic soundtrack that only a large-displacement V8 can deliver.

Taking the Benz out of the equation entirely still leaves us with a value argument to be made. Think for a moment of how often you see a modified/lifted/etc Jeep Wrangler or pickup truck on the road on any given day. It’s a scene that somehow continues to grow, and to build some of these vehicles properly — not going the cheapest route to accomplish an aesthetic alone — you’re looking at spending into the six figures including the initial vehicle purchase. Then you need to find a qualified builder, decide on what vehicle to start with, and even then you wouldn’t be able to build your own equivalent to the Rubicon 392 without resorting to an engine swap — no doubt pushing you well above and beyond what you’d send buying this Jeep outright (with a full warranty, to boot).

A Better Way to Mid-Life Crisis

To some this is going to read a bit harsher than it’s meant — allow me to elaborate. At a certain point in our lives we reach a threshold where there’s an acceptance of the idea of treating yourself. When one both desires and can justify the expense of a “toy” vehicle of some sorts, this is often viewed as a “mid-life crisis on account of many reaching that stage of professional and financial security somewhere around mid-life. This isn’t a bad thing, nor is it something to look down upon or judge in any way. If you want it and can afford it, why not enjoy it?

The argument for the Rubicon 392 as better answer to that call is simple. Supercars on public roads can be uncomfortable, abusive, and downright not fun at times, and unless you want to risk impound, you’re not driving them the way they’re built to be driven. With the Rubicon 392, you can actually use it. Its acceleration will put a grin on your face, as will its ability to climb over and drive through anything you can possibly throw at it. That rich HEMI burble from under the hood will never get old. And going a step further, the ability to peel back its roof and doors? Come on.

The “Why Not” Debate

Yes, these days there’s ample argument to be made for fuel economy savings and electrification — so much so that even Jeep is looking at electrifying its lineup in the coming years. We can go up one side of that conversation and down the other, but for the sake of this specific dialogue we’ll condense the conversation down to this being a lesser priority for the target demographic of a HEMI-powered Wrangler. This Rubicon 392 is a toy, or a plaything of sorts, the same way one would consider owning a boat. You’re not driving it to the office every day, nor are you taking it on cross-country jaunts (though, you technically could). When it comes out of the garage you’re out to have some fun, and absorbing the associated costs with a smile on your face.

Long story short, love it or hate it (and we rather love it), The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 fills a specific void in the Wrangler lineup that’s clearly been missing for quite some time. For Jeep to not build the 392 now — in a time where Jeep customization/modification/upgrading is at its peak — would be a misstep, especially knowing that the long-term brand road map points to EVs. Why not go out with a bang, right?
